I have a Master's degree in Human Genetics and work as a board certified genetic counselor. This is a field where my main responsibility is to transform complex medical terms and genetic information into something that my patients understand. This is similar to tutoring. In my practice, I take cues from patients about how they best learn and this is an important tool both in my job and as a tutor.
I teach only genetics and I typically tutor students at the college and graduate school level. I will tailor my work specifically to each student and try to use whatever methods you respond to the best.

The tutoring lesson itself went well I have no complaints in that department. Emily was knowledgeable and helpful with everything I asked and even agreed to see me super last minute which was great. However, when I received the bill for the one hour lesson we agreed to I was a little surprised to learn that I was charged $10 more than her hourly wage. At the end of our lesson we accidentally went 7 minutes over time and I actually had to stop the lesson myself because I had to go home. She billed me for $10 extra for 10 minutes. Emily did not notify me that we are going over-time and that going over-time actually results in extra charges. It is unfair to charge someone without telling them in advance; it's just bad etiquette. I'm a student and paying for a tutoring lesson is already financially straining enough without surprise extra charges. I'll pay the extra $10 but it's safe to say I won't be working with Emily again out of principle.
Extremely knowledgeable. She will make sure you understand the concept before moving on. Will also help explain with real life scenarios related to genetics. Highly recommend her.
Emily explains the most complicated and obscure concepts in such an elegant and easy-to-understand manner. Highly recommend and very grateful. Thank you!!
Emily was a really good tutor in a subject which is very specific (Genetics)and is hard to find tutors for. She was very nice, and professional, and knew the material well. She was easy to reach by phone and email, and I would recommend her to any students looking for help in Genetics. I only wish I had found her earlier in the semester!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a genetic counselor with a Master's degree in Human Genetics. As a genetic counselor, my job is to take complex genetic and medical information and transform it into easy language for patients to understand. This is very similar to tutoring as they both involve working together to understand the information presented to them. Throughout my work and graduate training, I tutored graduate students in both genetics and embryology. These students benefited greatly as I was able to gear their lessons to their specific learning styles.
