I am a licensed practicing NYC public high school teacher specializing in both general and special education instruction. As a teacher in NYC I work to open my students eyes to the reasons why education is so important. I work to excite students about the learning process by making real world connections that are easy to relate to and understand. I work to make the subject material interesting and relevant so that the emphasis is not on memorizing, but understanding. Higher order thinking skills are essential in the classroom and I place strong emphasis on the "how" and the "why" rather than simply facts and vocabulary. Experience has taught me that when students understand why they are learning something the process of learning naturally becomes more engaging and easy to understand.
Prior to becoming a teacher I worked in both politics and government in Washington D.C. and NYC. I regularly bring my previous professional experience into my teaching approach. This is of particular benefit when teaching American History and Global Studies.
Currently, I teach both Social Studies and English at the high school level. I love working with students on their summer reading lists and work to help students understand the deeper meaning and message within the types of literature presented at the high school level. High school literature should not be seen as a chore instead I work to help students recognize why books like Cather in the Rye, The Great Gatsby, and Fahrenheit 451 are timeless stories that are relevant to their lives and interests.
Students who need assistance improving their essay writing skills for both high school and the SAT would benefit greatly from my experience. Students in my English classes are routinely assigned essays and I use a number proven strategies to prepare students for high school essay writing, NYS Regents prep, and college essay writing.
I am energetic teacher and am highly respected by my students. I have experience teaching English and Social Studies from middle school to the high school level. Currently, I teach both special education and general education classes. I understand the various types of learning styles and know various strategies and approaches to help all students reach their goals.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Mt teaching license in grades 5-9. I have taught fifth and sixth grade special education as PS/IS 109 in Brooklyn. This included all subjects.
