I have taught ESL in several well-regarded colleges in NYC and taught abroad as well. I have a BA in history (specializing in Latin America), a MA in dance therapy and a teaching certificate in ESL from an institute in Madrid, Spain, where I was selected from a wide list of candidates for a two-year work-study scholarship. I lived there for almost eight years and consider myself almost fluent in Spanish. I teach academic writing, grammar, punctuation, communication, reading, pronunciation, accent reduction and vocabulary building. I have taught students from all backgrounds and nations, from middle-school age to senior citizens. I am patient, creative, have a good sense of humor, and try to make the lessons interesting and relevant. I have created hundreds of lesson plans and dialogues using grammar points, literature, vocabulary and pronunciation, based on the Rassias Method (an interactive acting-based method of teaching a second language), in which I am certified.

I am also a three-time award-winning journalist (NY Press Association's Better Newspaper Contest, 2007 and 2011) and freelance as an editor, proofreader and fact-checker. So with me you get the entire package of English-language skills and knowledge, honed over more than 25 years in the field. I not only teach, but also practice what I teach.

And just to round out my skills, I am a photographer and have been in many group shows in the Downtown area. I sell limited edition notecards of my original photographs (4x6 photo on 5x7 notecard paper, including envelope), perfect for all occasions.

I have many years' experience teaching grammar as an integral part of the many ESL programs I have taught in, which includes colleges and institutions both in New York and abroad. I also work as a proofreader, copy editor, editor and journalist (awards from NY Press Association), where accurate grammar is of the utmost importance.

I taught academic writing at Baruch and Hunter for many years. That comprised of teaching how to write five-paragraph essays on a wide range of topics, with warm-up writing exercises. My course also emphasized grammar, punctuation and self-editing techniques. I also taught CLIP at BMCC - how to write a well-organized argument. As a professional proofreader, copy editor and editor, I currently work with students on their personal statements for undergraduate or graduate school, essays, projects and resumes, the full package of academic (and beyond) services. In addition, I am a three-time award-winning journalist (NY Press Association's Better Newspaper Contest), so I not only know how to teach writing, but I am also successful at it. And I can make you successful as well.

knowledgeable and patient tutor

I like the way she helped me to clear my doubts about the English pronunciation and grammar. I appreciated the New York history tips that she gave me while we were working and this made the lesson even more interesting. She is very patient and I am very happy I found her!

Good, prepared teacher

Bonnie was good, prepared, and brought good stuff for practicing. She is helping me to enlarge my vocabulary. She is teaching me by reading articles about New York and giving me local information.

Engaging Tutor!

I really liked Bonnie's classes. She reviewed a lot of grammar with me but, mostly, she focused on pronunciation, as that was my main interest. She gave me many exercises, and really stressed the spots I have more difficulty with. One simple thing I really liked was how she always tried to engage in conversation, taking notes while we chatted about various things, so at the end she could point out the things I've said wrong or could improve. She is very friendly and organized and I found her didactics to be great. Bonus for the small bits of America/New-York history she gave every now and then, especially, related to English language.

Excellent tutor

Bonnie is an excellent tutor. She is very patient and understanding. I like the fact that she was able to correct my grammar without disrupting the message I was trying to give to other readers.
