If you look at the word "education" in the greatest dictionaries, you and I will find that it means e + ducere, or, "to lead out..." The idea here is that there is truth in your student, and your teacher must lead that out. This is the opposite of most educators, who want to take some alleged truth and cram it down the child's imaginary throat. Truth to tell, most young people are as smart as we allow them to be. I believe this so firmly.
Of course there are a few other matters that I could cite. Perhaps my five college degrees might be of service (one BA from Cornell, plus 4 grad degrees from Columbia, including a PhD). And these do have their place. I'd note here that I am strong in history, but also in French and Spanish; and in English. Also I can handle writing, as I am published with Macmillan Publishers in biography. But, still, I'd note that these are mere details. What is of importance is that I simply like students and believe in them. More to the point, I believe in tutoring. There are so many students who do well with a teacher in a one-on-one situation, even though they have not (yet) worked to highest potential previously.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As regards my competence in American history, please note that my PhD is in that field, and that it was taught at Columbia. More to the point: I am deeply aware that this is the most boringly taught subject in most US schools, and I am said to have a knack for making it more compelling.
Most to the point: I have learned how to get special viewpoints for my students that guarantee that they will (pleasantly) surprise their teachers. And, too, I'd note that I work well with young people who are under deadlines.
