I will help you with every aspect of English (or ESL): reading, writing, grammar, proofreading and TOEFL prep. After 25 years as a successful freelance writer, with thousands of articles published in The New York Times and other newspapers and magazines, I earned a TESOL Certificate from Columbia University. My goal now is to help native English speakers as well as newcomers to the US learn to speak, read and write excellent English. These skills are not only basic to good communication; they are also vital in achieving personal success. I can teach you strategies for passing the TOEFL and GED that will also strengthen your writing and reading abilities for the rest of your life. My approach is to teach English in everyday situations rather than through older techniques like repetition and memorization alone. An ESL reading lesson might be focused on understanding a menu or a train schedule. A writing assignment might begin with writing a TV review and lead to an essay about the changing role of TV in our society. Grammar is one of my specialties. You can't communicate effectively without it, but TESOL students--as well as native English speakers--struggle more with grammar than anything else in English. Grammar is a highway for ideas, and when the highway is blocked, the ideas stall. My job is to help students express their ideas, so they can speak and write without fear.

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

I received my TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)Certificate from Columbia University and did my student teaching at Columbia's Community English Program, where the students came from many different backgrounds. Besides tutoring privately, I also tutor writing at Baruch College in Manhattan, helping students who never enjoyed writing to express themselves in English. It is wonderful to watch them blossom as they feel more secure in their adopted language. If you need help with Business English or Test Preparation, I have received training in those areas too. English is not only essential in today's world--it is also beautiful, flexible and fun, once you get the hang of it.
Grammar,

Grammar

Grammar is the ugly duckling of language. It appears tedious to learn and a bore to think about until one day it becomes the beautiful swan of self-expression. English grammar gives you the tools to express your best ideas in the best way. When you understand grammar, your speech and writing reflect your intelligence and professionalism. Grammar is a secret that reveals itself like the opening of a flower.
Proofreading

Proofreading

Proofreaders train their eyes and minds the way athletes build their muscles--through long hours of practice. I learned my proofreading skills through 25 years of writing for The New York Times, among other publications. Part of the job was to read and reread my work many times, looking for errors and better ways to say things. What is a writer but a rewriter? I now enjoy helping others tweak their own writing into works they can be proud of.

Reading,

Reading

I am qualified to teach reading for several reasons. First, as a college English Education major, I studied the teaching of reading. I have also been a serious reader all my life, and while I can now read challenging texts with ease, this was not always so. Confusing referents, baroque sentence structures, imprecisely written texts and other obstacles often made me close my books in frustration. In studying for my certificate in TESOL I was exposed to several methods of teaching reading. I have developed my own approach as a result of all these influences.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Vocabulary grows as one reads, converses, watches TV and movies, travels and otherwise ventures into the new and unknown. My vocabulary multiplied during my years as a journalist, when I was constantly delving into new subject areas, interviewing people of different backgrounds and researching unfamiliar fields and terminology. Vocabulary cannot be taught in one or two sessions: its development takes a lifetime. During my tutoring sessions with ESL students, I define words when I am asked, but I don't expect the student to remember and use a new word right away. Research shows that we must encounter a new word 16 times before we can assimilate it into our own vocabulary.

The TOEFL is a challenging test that even native English speakers find difficult. I approach the TOEFL with authentic materials that simulate the test conditions. While I aim at helping students achieve their desired TOEFL score, I emphasize overall learning skills that will benefit students for the rest of their lives.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Roberta is a very accomplished and experienced writer, in her own right, so whatever suggestions she makes about my writing are gladly accepted and appreciated. I trust her opinions and am overjoyed when she sees something she likes in my writing. She is a terrific and inspiring tutor. You'd be silly not to work with her.

Roberta is the best!

I started working with Roberta in the spring of 2015. I came in with a general sense of what I wanted to explore. I wanted to learn the basics of journalism. We got right into learning the main principles of both your standard hard news piece and also opinion news pieces. She's excellent at listening to what you want to accomplish and forming a lesson plan to best address those goals. In addition, Roberta is great at expanding on what you're looking to accomplish. One lesson comes to mind in particular. I was given the liberty to choose one topic, but I had to present it both as a hard news piece - object and concise, and then as a political op ed. That exercise is still bearing fruit, as it truly helped me understand the principles and skills that go into writing both. Again, Roberta is great at helping you reach your goals through creative and fun lesson plans. Recently, in the winter of 2016 Roberta and I made a pivot toward creative non-fiction. I wanted to practice descriptive writing. I knew this was important for writing features and an overall essential skill for journalists to have. I came in with a free-write, it was a description of an experience I had at a diner. To Roberta's credit she saw something in this free-write and urged to explore 'creative non-fiction'. A couple months later I find myself with a personal essay - a piece of creative non-fiction that I'm now looking to publish. It took me many hours to write and Roberta's guidance was invaluable. Along with being an excellent and professional grade editor, (a testament to her many years working as a professional journalist), she was able to see the strength of my story and help bring it to life by encouraging me to focus on certain elements and ignoring others. Finally, before I came to Roberta I had a very loose sense of what direction I wanted to head in with my writing. While I'm still trying to figure out how to turn my passion for writing into a career, I'm starting to see a path forward. If it wasn't for my work with Roberta, I would still be lost. I encourage anyone with an interest, or passion for writing to work with Roberta as she is the very best at transforming your interests into a lesson plan that can see those motivations realized in ways you probably didn't know existed. On a side note: Roberta is extremely accessible. Centrally located in Manhattan and responsive via email to any concern you might have. She's a very nice personable-women who has a genuine interest in your work and fulfilling the role as teacher and mentor. I don't have any real negative comments. For a while I was coming from the Jersey Shore so it was tough to get into Manhattan, but I think this has more to do with NJ Transit.

Great Tutor!

I have already taken the TOEFL test twice before I started taking classes with Roberta. I needed to achieve a score of 26 at the speaking test in order to advance in my veterinary career, and I was feeling very frustrated I couldn't achieve it in the previous two tests. Roberta was very patient and helped me to identify my weaknesses, and she gave me great advice on how to have stronger answers at the test. After 10 classes with her, my total score at the TOEFL was 111, and I achieved 27 in the speaking test. She is as great teacher, and I would recommend her to anyone that is interested in having a great score at the TOEFL test.

A great tutor for essay writing.

Roberta is great on giving valuable advice on my essays. She provided advice according to my customized needs. She not only gave advice on grammar, sentence structure, word choice, but also on content, and the essay structure. She made my essays look more smooth and more reader friendly. She's very patient answering all my questions and our section went very efficiently. I sincerely recommend Roberta.

TOEFL preparation

I took classes with Roberta three times a week for a moths before my TOEFL test. I needed to score minimum a 100. After Roberta taught me how to deal with the words of semantic structures I didn't know and how to arrange my essays I scored 110! I am very pleased with the results. Thank you Roberta.
