About Tiffany

My love of teaching comes from a lifelong love of learning. As a summa cum laude graduate, I know that hard work and dedication to learning can pay off. As one of the top 50 WyzAnt tutors nationwide for several years, I have had the pleasure of helping hundreds of students realize their own potential and see their grades and test scores improve.

I specialize in math and English tutoring for tests such as the GRE, GMAT, SAT, ACT, GED/TASC, ISEE/SSAT/SHSAT, and the NYS Regents exams. I also teach homeschool math for all grades and I cover all math topics up to precalculus.

One of my goals for each session is to keep the student challenged, but not overwhelmed. I assign homework after every lesson, and I provide periodic assessments and progress reports.

I am generally available for tutoring every day from 9am to 9pm and I can travel to students or meet them online.

24-hour notice is required to cancel or shorten an in-person lesson, but we can make up the time with an online session.

I am happy to answer any questions. I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success in your studies!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Over the last 3 years, I have helped many students improve their math and English skills to prepare for the ASVAB test. One of my students raised his score from 22 to 35 after just a few weeks of tutoring, and now he is joining the army! I begin with a diagnostic test of the student's current abilities, which has the same types of questions found on the actual test. This is followed by an in-depth discussion of each question--not just the right answer, but the strategy the student can use to arrive at the right answer in seconds. I also work with students to help them prepare for the ASVAB subject tests by preparing overview lessons on each subject area, practice tests, and material for further study at home.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have 6 years of experience providing private tutoring for children in preschool through 6th grade.

My goal with children is to introduce and/or reinforce the skills taught in school, while providing fun, caring, and encouragement to help them further explore their world and develop a love of learning that will last a lifetime. Over the summer break, I can help students to bridge the gap from one grade to the next, so they are fully prepared for the new school year.

I can work with the student’s textbooks, or I can bring my own teaching materials and activities, which are always age-appropriate and aligned with NY state educational standards. I am also happy to communicate with my students' teachers to coordinate our efforts.

I am available for tutoring sessions in the morning, after school, or on evenings and weekends. I can travel to the student's home or any other location that is convenient for the family.

I mainly tutor English for test preparation, but I also have experience helping high school and college students with English literature and writing assignments.

Over the past 6 years, I have tutored many students for the GED, with great results. I am now also tutoring students for the TASC, which has replaced the GED in NYS. I am qualified to tutor every section of the new GED and the TASC. I focus on teaching the core concepts tested, as well as proven test-taking strategies and time management skills that help students finish quickly and accurately.

Geometry is my favorite math subject and I love not only helping struggling students succeed in geometry, but also instilling in them the same passion for the subject. I have over 6 years of experience tutoring geometry for elementary school through high school. The subjects I cover include area, perimeter, volume, surface area, lines and angles, polygons, triangles, circles, geometry proofs and logic, coordinate geometry, and trigonometry.

On the new GRE, I scored in the 99th percentile. I tutor for the entire GRE test, but most students come to me for help on the math section. I share the GRE test-taking strategies I use on the test, but I also focus on making sure the test taker has a solid foundation in the core math and English concepts tested.

I worked for several years as an instructor and about a year as an Education Director for an English language school in Manhattan that prepared students for various tests of English, including the IELTS, so I am very familiar with the test and its requirements. In total, I have about five years of experience tutoring ESL and the IELTS, specifically. I also earned a TEFL certificate in teaching English as a second language.

I have been tutoring for the ISEE (all three levels) for about 3 years with great results. Since I specialize in both math and English tutoring, I can tutor for all sections of this test. With every lesson, I don't just teach to the test, but strive to improve the student's core skills in reading, writing, math, and reasoning. However, I do share my best test-taking strategies and encourage students to use them, because I feel they help develop reasoning ability.

I tutor students for the SAT literature subject test every year, but I can also help high school and college students with literature assignments.

Philosophers distinguish correct reasoning from incorrect reasoning by means of logic, so introductory logic courses are required in most philosophy BA programs. While completing my undergrad degree in philosophy, I took several courses in logic beyond the introductory level and received A grades in all. In my last year, I tutored introductory logic to beginning-level students.

I explain in detail such basic logical concepts as propositions, arguments, explanations, deductive and inductive arguments, and the difference between validity and truth. I teach the concepts behind the types and functions of language and the methods used in constructing definitions. For instance, students will learn the difference between the extension (denotation) and intension (connotation) of a term that is defined. I also help students learn how to analyze arguments to find problems of reasoning by recognizing fallacies (typical mistakes in reasoning) of relevance, defective induction, presumption, and ambiguity.

Following that, I teach students how to analyze the structure of deductive arguments using classical Aristotelian logic. Students will learn the four kinds of categorical propositions, the different types of syllogisms, and the square of opposition. From there, I teach beginning-level modern (symbolic) logic. Students will learn the 9 elementary argument forms (the rules of inference) and the 10 logical equivalencies (rules of replacement) and how to use these forms to construct argument proofs. They will also learn how to construct and work with truth tables and truth trees.

I try to teach not just the terms or the steps involved in introductory logic, but to help students gain a conceptual understanding--a knowledge of both the "how" and the "why"--so they are better prepared for more advanced logic.

I have 6 years of experience tutoring students for the NYS English Language Arts and Mathematics exams, as well as the Geometry Regents, Integrated Algebra Regents, and Algebra 2/Trig Regents.

My goal is to reinforce and expand on what the student is learning in school so that the student is fully prepared for success on the exam. I use current textbooks approved by the state, as well as official practice material from previous Regents exams.

I can work in conjunction with the student's English and math teachers, to keep the student on track and challenged.

SAT Math

I tutor for the math section of the SAT, as well as the SAT Math Level 1 and Level 2 subject tests. I use the most recent test prep books, online resources, and my own material. My recent SAT students improved on previous scores by up to 250 points after working with me.

SAT Reading

I tutor for the new SAT and for the SAT Subject Test in Literature. I have over six years of experience tutoring for all the different sections of the SAT. Students I have worked with have increased their scores by more than 250 points and reached the highest percentiles. For the literature test, I teach all the important literary terms and concepts. For tests, I also teach test-taking skills, including time management and guessing strategies.
