Greetings! I have tutored students of a wide range of abilities and backgrounds for many years, both in Europe and the United States. I am trilingual - Italian, French, English. Also, I have extensive experience in translation, editing, and proofreading. In addition to grammar, reading, writing and conversation, I can offer ample information about the culture, history and everyday life of the countries where these languages are spoken as I have lived in these countries for long periods of time. I take particular interest in the individual, personal needs of the student, I am able to detect weaknesses and find all possible ways to help the student to eliminate them.
If you are an adult and plan to travel to these countries on vacation or business, in addition to instructing you in the language, I can assist you with cross-cultural orientation and logistics as I have detailed knowledge of major European cities.
While I graduated in foreign languages, I enjoy tutoring students in SAT reading and writing. I am particularly strong in English grammar having used my background to develop courses in comparative grammar for continuing education schools.
I am comfortable with students of all age levels, grades or abilities and I like to assess their progress to adjust my instruction as needed. What matters most in my teaching is you, the student(s) and my ability to make your learning experience more desirable. Greetings! I could not possibly give Giovanna a higher recommendation as a tutor. I am a Master of Art History student at Hunter College and came to Giovanna with the problem of preparing for my mid-program foreign language exam in Italian. The exam required the accurate translation of a 500 word passage from an art historical text within one hour. The task was extremely daunting and stressful for me, but with Giovanna's help I successfully passed the exam. Within the first week of tutoring sessions Giovanna astutely calculated my skill level, goals, and time remaining until the exam to come up with the perfect course designed specifically for me. We met weekly over a three month period, and at every session Giovanna was on time, entirely focused, and prepared with practice material she had composed specifically for me. I can say with confidence it would be impossible to find a better tutor given Giovanna's impressive academic and professional experience, natural skill and inclination as a teacher, and lovely personal demeanor.
I desired to review and progress in my knowledge of Italian for graduate school, and so began a series of lessons with Giovanna. Each lesson was built on the concepts and ideas of the previous session, and I could not be happier. Giovanna was patient with my weaknesses, and knew exactly how much to press certain topics in order to reinforce my learning - but without breaking my mind! The concepts covered in our time together has given me a confidence that I lacked - especially in dealing with certain tenses and moods within the language that I tended to avoid. I highly recommend Giovanna to any student with a desire to learn in a relaxed environment with a joyful result.
We reviewed essential vocabulary to prepare for an upcoming trip to Italy. The focus was geared toward my field of study to make our sessions most useful in advance of my time abroad.
I had a great experience with Giovanna. She is a great tutor and I had really a fantastic experience with her. I would suggest Giovanna to all my friends if they ever needed tutoring. Thanks!
Giovanna's classes are helpful in so many ways. She explains so I can understand what's going on underneath the surface of a language and give me a foundation for the language growth. Thank you for all your dedication!
I found Giovanna to be an excellent teacher, well prepared, prompt, enthusiastic, and patient. Her English is strong and Italian impeccable. I enjoyed very much our conversations on the short stories of Alberto Moravia among other cultural topics.
I had to pass a graduate level requirement within one semester. The requirement consisted of translating 500 words of an academic article into English. Although this was a daunting way to learning a language, Giovanna embraced the challenge. She provided me with skills, tools, and tips as to how to approach the exam. Within the first lesson she assessed which aspects of grammar were most crucial to the process. She did research and created worksheets in between lessons. Giovanna's professional experience in translating was particularly helpful to our lessons. Giovanna is hard-working and dedicated and with her help I passed an exam after about 3 months of lessons. I recommend her as a tutor.
I had never work one on one with a tutor and didn't know what to expect. The blessing was meeting Giovanna!
Giovanna almost instantly contacted me after my putting in a request on WyzAnt. She was accessible and very flexible in scheduling our first lesson and subsequent lessons. Our first lesson was about what I felt my needs were and her appraisal of what level I was at in my fluency of Italian. From there she recommended several different books, one on grammar, one on verb conjugation and several different Italian story books some with audio CDs. Our lessons are broken down into sections. First a conversation in which Giovanna asks questions and we have a dialogue in Italian. Second, a section devoted to a new element of grammar and finally an extremely fun part where I read from one of the Italian story books helping in learning new vocabulary and pronunciation. Giovanna is extremely knowledgeable, patient and professional. I look forward to many more lessons and highly recommend her!
Giovanna takes the time to explain whatever I ask. If I forget something we already went over in a previous lesson, she is happy to explain it to me again. She is very patient which to me is one of the most important attributes for a tutor. Among many of her other attributes, she has a vast knowledge of the language and will answer all my questions. She is always professional and very punctual and flexible. Punctuality and flexibility are very important to those of us whom are on a tight schedule. Kudos to WyzAnt for only the best! In my case, that would be Giovanna.
We enjoy working with Giovanna. She is patient, knowledgeable and very flexible with her schedule. She is easy to get a hold of and understands how to teach some one to make it 'click'. We highly recommend her.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
No matter how difficult you may find learning English, I can help you to achieve your goal. I have taught English to foreigners in Europe for many years and in general, students were immensely helped by the fact that I could underline the differences between their native language and English, being myself multilingual.
Because of my experience, I can quickly understand why you are struggling to learn a given grammatical principle for instance, I can suggest tricks and techniques to remember phrasal verbs, idioms, vocabulary etc. and I never get tired to repeat and review.
I am strong in the area of verbs conjugations and can explain in simple words grammatical concepts that hardly find an equivalent translation in English. I maintain my fluency by traveling frequently to Paris where I completed my studies and lived for many years.
