Holding First Class Honours Degrees in Mathematical Sciences and Psychology from Newcastle University, and an MSc. in Applied Statistics from Cambridge University, England, I became a full-time Private Mathematics Coach over ten years ago, tutoring students to undergraduate and postgraduate level. I have worked internationally with students in New York, London, Moscow, Paris, Montreal, Riyadh, Sofia, Florida and the West Indies.
Areas of expertise include Actuarial Science, Finance, Statistics, Biostatistics, Singapore Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra I & II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Math Analysis, Precalculus, Calculus (AP), Linear Algebra, Differential Calculus, Complex Analysis, Discrete Mathematics, Number Theory, Financial Mathematics, Accounting and SAT Math. I can also help you prepare for NY state Regents, PSAT, SAT, ACT, SSAT, SHSAT, ISEE, GRE, SAT subject tests in Math (both IC and IIC), GED, GRE, GMAT, CLEP, LSAT or Praxis tests.
I have experience tutoring students with autism, ADD, ADHD, and other learning problems.
In preparation for any of the above math-based tests, I focus on imparting deep-level mathematical understanding, and that can only be taught with individual attention. One of my great pleasures is helping students reach moments of epiphany when the light dawns and perplexity gives way to clarity.
Throughout our sessions, I focus on making you think for yourself and develop flexible mastery. Working together, I guide you to the correct solution to difficult test questions, using a Socratic method, leading you step by step in the right direction and without giving you the answers.
Tutoring for many years has afforded me the opportunity to go through most of the available material, and I have pinpointed the techniques and strategies that work most effectively on each question type.
In a conventional classroom setting, many students are unable to keep up with the pace of the assignments or lectures, have conflicting work commitments, or simply are unable to remember the appropriate tips and tricks under the time pressure of the exam.
I’ll help you to put all of the material into perspective, and help you to better understand the tips and tricks that you have learned, so that you will be able to apply the appropriate technique to each new problem that is presented.
I will tailor our sessions together to reflect your abilities, goals, and time-constraints. I also provide much more individual feedback than could be possible in a large classroom, so you will find that time spent with me is much more productive.
Whether you have taken a class before, or if you have just been working on your own--or even if you have not yet begun to study, I can help you improve your score. With guidance and practice, the examination becomes a challenge you can meet with a level head. When you walk into the test center, feeling confident and prepared, you know you will do your very best. My 9 year old daughter was so happy that a teacher would actually stop and discuss all her questions, even if they were tangential or 'off topic', instead of putting them off for some unforeseeable 'later'. Edward, you were patient and calm. I think my daughter inherently understands that you love math and she likes to be with people who love what they do. Look forward to next week.
This great man is one in millions; rare to find! He doesn't waste time. Any minute you spend with him has a very return. He makes things happen and sustain. When you talk to him you definitely talk to a giant mountain of knowledge and skills.
Last summer I was having difficulty teaching myself the material for the SOA Probability exam. Searching through google I came across Edward's Wyzant profile. Upon reading reviews I decided Edward had the background I was looking for. To make a long story short, I was not disappointed. Edward's organized and methodical approach to teaching the material helped me pass my exam on the first attempt. I will definitely be hiring him again once I start studying for exam FM.
Edward's knowledge and skill at conveying complicated concepts is the best I've seen. He is thoughtful, patient and highly intelligent and his range spans from the primary grades to graduate schools. It has been a great experience.
Edward is a great tutor. I had taken the exam studying on my own not really grasping the material. I met with Edward about three weeks before the exam a bunch of times and he really explained the material thoroughly and clearly. He introduced me to the type of questions that would be on the exam and how to tackle them. Highly recommended!
The best tutor my children ever had. Always patient and punctual, an overall positive experience. I highly recommend Edward for all ages seeking help.
Edward helped me prepare for P/1 which I passed in September after helping me for FM which I passed in June. Edward knows and communicated the heavily math/calculus based material very well. Edward can either take ownership of the syllabus and guide your studies or simply answer questions. This flexibility helped me as I had different needs for different sections of the material.
I would recommend Edward for both FM & P.
Edward is hands down the best tutor I've ever had. He comes very well prepared with instruction and specific practice problems for the exam, in my case SOA Exam P. With his clear exam and tutoring experience, he even anticipates a lot of my questions, no matter how difficult. He has complete mastery of the exam material and explains concepts very clearly and thoroughly. I will certainly be back for Exam FM!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Over the past 3 years, I have been successfully tutoring students in the early Society of Actuary examinations through to MLC. I am close to reaching Associate status with the SOA. I also tutor candidates for the VEE portion - Corporate Finance, Economics and Linear Regression. I have a long background in Finance, mathematics and statistics, including Fellowship status as a Chartered Certified Accountant. I qualified with KPMG, then working as Audit Manager in the Caribbean.
During my time as a mathematics and test preparation tutor, I have worked extensively with ADD students of all ages. Indeed, my first undergraduate thesis as a Psychology major focused specifically on the aetiology underlying ADD, then termed ADHD.
I've been tutoring all aspects of the ASVAB for over 2 years. I have found my knowledge of advanced mathematics, English and other standardized tests can be directly applied to help potential students achieve their goals in this test. I break down the exam into efficient and effective test taking strategies so that each student has the best chance of passing chance of success on exam day.
I tutor students in Biostatistics and Epidemiology at Columbia Medical School. Most of out work is performed using the R programming language. I have also been teaching statistics and regression in many other applications for several years. These include Psychology, Nursing, Marketing Management, Actuarial Science, MBA, Economics and Econometrics to name just a few.
In addition to an extensive background in Accounting - I qualified as an Audit manager with KPMG on an overseas secondment in the Caribbean - I have focused my tutoring business in getting students through the demanding statistics/accounting and corporate finance programs administered as part of the Executive MBA courses. Some of my recent successful students are graduating imminently from the prestigious engineering MBA offered at Wharton University of Penn.
I tutor undergraduate and graduate students in advanced economics from Columbia University, Columbia Business School and NYU.
I also tutor econometrics, most of the quantitative MBA courses including financial economics, accounting, statistics and corporate finance.
I have been teaching ISEE and the SSAT for entry into prestigious private schools such as Horace Mann for several years. I also teach all follow up standard tests such as the SAT, Sat math level 1 and 2, the GRE and GMAT. The tests are very similar and predictable. Recent successes include a 9 year old scoring at grade 8 and 9 level in all sections of the ISEE and a 17 year old that scored a perfect 800 in Sat math level 2 and has been accepted into the University of Pennsylvania.
