About Evan

I graduated with a B.A in philosophy from the City College of New York. Throughout my time in school, I did particularly well in math and was quite willing to help others.

My experience includes a year of volunteering at the East Harlem School at Exodus House where I spent time tutoring students in the 5th through 8th grade in pre-algebra and introductory algebra. As part of my duties as a volunteer at the East Harlem School, I also tutored pre-K children in basic math and reading at a nearby after school program. I also volunteered at Street Squash where I tutored 7th and 8th grade students once a week. I have also been the go-to person for people to get basic math help.

While I tutor, I want the students to not only say what the answer is to a problem, but also to understand the logic of solving said problems so related problems can be more easily done and to see how this may be applicable to experiences outside of the confines of the routine of schooling. In addition, I want to make sure they do not see me as an infallible authority figure but as a guide.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have experience working at StreetSquash as well as with another student in algebra 1 and excelled in that level of math as a student. In addition, I have the patience and humility to use all available resources to help.

Elementary (K-6th)

I spent a year volunteering at the East Harlem School at Exodus House where I tutored students in the 5th through 8th grade. The bulk of my tutoring was to the 5th and 6th graders. Also, I used some of this time tutoring pre-K and kindergarten kids at a nearby program for math, reading, and writing. Outside of that one period, I have visited the East Harlem School to proctor exams and help the younger students out for whatever homework problems they may have.

Elementary Math

For three years, I was a homework assistant at StreetSquash where I had particular focus on math for middle school students. There, I gained experience working one-on-one and with multiple students. Also, I spent a year volunteering at the East Harlem School at Exodus House where I tutored students in the 5th through 8th grade. The bulk of my tutoring was to the 5th and 6th graders. Also, I used some of this time tutoring pre-K and kindergarten kids at a nearby program for math, reading, and writing.

Prealgebra

I have helped some younger children, both at afterschool programs and those in my family, with their math homework and was able to get improvement from them. Even more importantly, I was able to impart some of the ways to get a deeper understanding beyond simply getting the answer correct.

Consistent and patient

My son is having a great time adjusting to his new tutor. He's becoming more confident. We still have a ways to go but Evan gives him the boost he needs. Today we had our first 2 hour session which I know was a challenge for my son however he managed to get through it.
