About Todd

I studied Physics and Astronomy at Wesleyan University. While there, I spent time as a TA tutoring physics to other undergraduates in both group and one-on-one settings. Since then I've spent time working in health care as an organ transplant placement coordinator and as 3D animator and motion graphics artist for film, video games, and advertising. Along the way I've continued tutoring math and science. I've always had a deep interest in math, science, and music. I still enjoy digging into problem sets and figuring things out - and sharing my enthusiasm with others.

When tutoring, I cater the approach to the specific individual - figuring out their individual learning style and appealing to their natural ways of understanding things. With this established, the specific challenges and misunderstandings that the student may be experiencing can be isolated and addressed - leading to a stronger fundamental understanding of the material, more confidence, and hopefully more enjoyment.

I am also a jazz pianist - I love making, recording, and listening to music and gig semi-professionally. I also love walking around New York City, art, video games, yoga...

I can also solve a Rubik's Cube and happy to demonstrate :)

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Flash

I've worked with Adobe Flash for over 5 years in various professional and personal contexts. This includes building sites from scratch using both timeline animation as well as procedural ActionScript programming, working on Flash-based games, and producing many Flash banner ad campaigns. At my previous advertising job, I often helped people understand and work with Flash. Links to work can be provided upon request.

Music Production

I've been a musician all my life and have been studying music production and technology for over 10 years. This includes working in a professional recording studio and working on independent projects. I have experience recording, mixing, and producing using several DAW programs including Ableton Live and Pro Tools. Links to work can be provided upon request.

Music Theory

I've been a jazz pianist and musician most my life and have studied music theory both privately and academically as it pertains to both jazz and classical.

Piano

I have been playing piano for most of my life and have gigged regularly as a jazz musician. When it comes to piano, improvisation is my main focus and passion. By breaking down and diving into the world of melody, harmony and rhythm, we can gain new freedoms which allow us to engage with the piano in new and exciting ways - further deepening our relationship with the piano, music, and expression.

Lessons are geared towards the student's particular style and goals. Ultimately one's relationship with piano is a very personal one, and my role as teacher is to aid the student in discovering and fostering their own - providing tricks and areas to explore along the way.

My tutoring is best suited for students who already have at least some experience with piano and want to learn or advance their understanding of improvisation, jazz, harmony, or theory.

I am in the East Village and can provide lessons here or travel within a reasonable distance.

Very patient and knowledgable

I highly recommend Todd as a Calculus and Physics tutor. He has been working with my 11th grade son for several months helping him prepare for his Honors PreCalculus and Honors Physics classes. My son's grades started improving almost immediately after working with Todd. Prior to Todd my son struggled for months trying to make sense of the material. With Todd's help he started to participate in cl
