My name is Megan, and I am so excited about the opportunity to tutor! I have a Ph.D. in Psychology, with a minor in Statistics. I have extensive experience teaching and tutoring at the college level. I have taught psychology, statistics, study skills, writing, and other various subjects at the college level for the past eight years. I also have experience tutoring elementary, middle school, and high school aged students as well. Given my background, I have written and published several journal articles as well as served as an expert editor and reviewer for scholarly journals. Thus, I have a very strong writing background and can teach writing mechanics, grammar, style, reading, etc. Additionally, because I have a Ph.D. in Psychology, I am able to approach tutoring with a psychological approach designed to reduce anxiety and increase confidence in students. This method has helped raise several of my students' grades from Ds and Fs to As and Bs.
Throughout my academic career, I have always loved learning and teaching others what I have learned. Most importantly, I have a passion for teaching. From tutoring my own siblings to tutoring children at the Boys and Girls Club to teaching college-level courses and tutoring college students, I love helping explain materials in new ways that will truly help the student understand the material.
I have such a passion for teaching! I would love the opportunity to open up the world of learning for students. I know how frustrating learning can be at times, but with patience and often multiple explanations, it can be very rewarding. My name is Megan, and I am so excited about the opportunity to tutor! Megan is an excellent tutor. She knows how to teach research/English and I feel very confident she will be able to help me. She was extremely thorough in her explanation of how I should proceed with my research project. Megan also has a very nice personality, and is patient, warm, kind and sensitive. She is a very intelligent woman.
Megan has been an absolute God-send! The tutor that I had selected for my high school son through WyzAnt was fabulous; so, when my college daughter in Waco needed a tutor for French, I decided to try you again. You have not disappointed me! Megan is gifted at teaching, and offers up various helps for my daughter, as well as being an encourager. I absolutely love her and what she has done for my child. Thank you for offering wonderful tutors and taking the hassle of payment out of the equation (both for me and the tutor).
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Philosophy is one of my greatest passions, so I chose to minor in it as an undergraduate at Baylor University. During that time, I learned to become very familiar with various philosophers and their ideas. From the foundational ideas of Plato and Socrates to the ground-breaking ideas of Hobbes and Locke to more recent philosophers such as Alasdair MacIntyre, I have come to love the art of philosophy.
I have taken a wide variety of philosophy classes and have studied several different topic areas. This includes: Classic History of Philosophy, Logic and Critical Thinking, History of Modern European Philosophy, Jewish Philosophy, and Philosophy of Faith. I have studied the ideas of and read the original texts of several famous philosophers including (but not limited to): Socrates, Plato, Augustine, Aquinas, Bacon, Descartes, Hume, Kierkegaard, Durkheim, Kant, Hobbes, Locke, Nietzsche, Machiavelli, and Marx.
In addition to taking several courses, I have taught Ancient and Modern philosophy courses at the undergraduate level. In those courses, we covered famous philosophers' works such as Aristotle, Plato, and Machiavelli.
I believe that taking the time to read various philosophers' ideas helps develop skills such as critical thinking as well as learn how to develop an argument. Additionally, the intense analysis that is required when reading a philosophic text is both engaging and challenging. To me, philosophy is a great door to many of life's most important questions: How does the world work? Why are things the way they are? Can you prove the existence of God? What is the nature of man?
I hope, through tutoring, to both share my love for philosophy and to help individuals develop the critical thinking skills needed to analyze philosophy. Additionally, I hope to help them not only understand philosophical arguments but to challenge them and create their own arguments as well. In short, I believe one should learn how to engage in a conversation with the philosophers themselves.
Currently, I have a Ph.D. in Psychology from Baylor University. Part of my job includes writing, editing, and publishing journal articles in professional journals. Additionally, I serve as an expert editor/reviewer for other academics' scholarly work. To date, I have published 18 journal articles and book chapters.
Thus, I am highly qualified to help with any proofreading or editing that may be needed for a wide variety of topics. In addition to my professional attainment in writing, I performed very well at the undergraduate and graduate levels as well. I wrote papers that received high grades (all As) in a variety of topics: philosophy, psychology, middle east studies, history, literature, etc. I am very familiar with both APA and MLA formatting.
I have taught study skills to students at the college level for the past 6 years as a Ph.D. student and now as a professor with a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology. Given my background in psychology, I can not only teach study skills, but I can utilize techniques designed to decrease anxiety and increase confidence among students.
