Hey! Let me help you or your child with language or humanities studies through informal, fun, and effective tutoring at the level of attention that you deserve and to which you are accustomed.
My strengths are teaching French to beginners and English as a Second Language to non-native English speakers, with an extreme attention to detail and learning style personalized to your unique ways of learning.
I received a BA in French from UCLA with an emphasis in language, literature, and urban culture, an MA in Cultural Anthropology from the California Institute of Integral Studies, and have also had extensive training in German and Spanish. I also have dramatic arts and speech training whose practicality complements an already discriminating educational background.
I have lived in France and Germany and have experience teaching both kids and adults in the classroom and one-on-one setting. I can help you not only with perfecting your grammar, but also with perfecting your accent. These languages are NOT my mother tongue, which means that, just like you, I had to learn the language “from scratch” – and I went on to major in French in college. I've been there and understand what it takes to master French as a native English speaker. I did it and so can you. While textbooks are helpful as a guide, using the spoken language as it is used in the day-to-day world as the base from which to learn is much more effective and much more fun. Exploring current events, movies, music, culture, and literature is a great, non-traditional way to learn and a way to personally customize your learning experience to the ways you enjoy learning.
I help you re-frame and approach subjects like geography, reading, languages, humanities, and schoolwork in general in a non-traditional way that makes it fun and relevant to life. Getting to know you and discovering your interests and using them to approach the material is the most important dimension to making learning happen, and in the most personalized and attentive way possible.

I made a conscious decision to learn French in January 2009 and visited the WyzAnt site via a general internet search. Here, I discovered a tutor who possesses the requisite characteristics and "fit" that provides me the best pathways in which to become fluent in French. Olen is quite adept and proficient in several languages; moreover, he has a significant breadth of understanding of the cultural nuances and contextual phenomena necessary for a student to become proficient in a foreign language; this is in stark contrast to other instructors who resort to simply having student memorize a litany of phrases. Olen is extremely well-grounded and knowledgeable in grammar, vocabulary, syntax, etc. Moreover, he is well equipped in tailoring lessons for the individual learner based upon his experience with a myriad of pedagigcal methods. Although I am primarily using a "Living Language" French textbook, he is very adept at delving further into just the printed lessons and providing personal guidance which fosters an increased resonance and relevancy of the language for me. Because I work and travel frequently, it may be difficult sometimes for me to keep pace with the intensity of the lessons. However, Olen is extremely patient and will modify his approach accordingly. We have also learned about French culture through reading various French magazines, articles, and by watching France-24 on his I-Phone. In addition, he possesses a gift of making our sessions engaging, insightful and entertaining. He is very professional (always on time), has an excellent sense of humor and has tremendous patience relative to my persistent mangling of the French language. I would highly recommend him as a young, passionate instructor to those who have some experience in foreign languages, complete novices (like myself), and those individuals interested in refining their English/American accent. This young man will definitely make an impact on your life and aid in expanding your world-view.
Olen is a true professional and dedicated teacher.
Before I had his ESL lessons, I could not speak loudly because I was unsure about my English skill.
Olen improved my pronunciation back to vowels and gave me confidence.
Thanks to him, my co-workers and boss are now impressed with my progress.
As well as a good teacher, he is a very cultured person who is free from bias.
You can talk freely from religion to politics without worrying that your different ways of looking at things might bother him (or you.)
If you would like to speak English like a native, I recommend you to try his "sessions".
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught English to German kindergarteners with a company called Oskar Lernt Englisch on a freelance contract basis. I also was a camp counselor at their English language immersion summer camp, where we had daily, structured language classes in addition to camp activities. I also taught English to German adults in a class that I created called "English with Theater," using theatrical texts to improve the comprehension and spoken English of intermediate level English students at a school called Sprachenatelier Berlin. I tailor each lesson to the student's needs with a combination of vocal, reading, and listening exercises. I consider myself to be a highly effective and patient teacher and all of my students would agree.
