Bio

I am a composer, jazz pianist, classical violinist, and film composer based in New York City. I am highly knowledgeable about many areas of music, including tonal theory, species counterpoint, advanced jazz theory, post-tonal theory (set theory, serialism, interval classes, process-oriented music), and much more. In my own music, I like to balance moments of extreme complexity with extreme simplicity.

I am a composer, jazz pianist, classical violinist, and film composer based in New York City. I am highly knowledgeable about many areas of music, including tonal theory, species counterpoint, advanced jazz theory, post-tonal theory (set theory, serialism, interval classes, process-oriented music), and much more. In my own music, I like to balance moments of extreme complexity with extreme simplicity.

During my time Jacobs School of Music, I taught courses on post-tonal theory and aural skills. At Brown University I taught species counterpoint, part writing, and tonal theory. I'm excited to help you nail down the fundamentals of music, understand challenging topics, and potentially move beyond the standard curriculum in creative and exciting ways.

An lastly, a few musicians that I'm inspired by: Gyorgy Ligeti, Miles Davis, SOPHIE, Beethoven, Cecil Taylor, D'Angelo, Thomas Ades, David Bowie, Earl Sweatshirt, Kate Soper.

I received my bachelor's degree in computer science from Brown University, where I studied a wide range of topics, including software engineering, computer systems, functional programming, security, and more. I have experience working with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Java, React, C, Python, OCaml, Scala, and Assembly. I was a teaching assistant for Computer Systems, where we worked in C and Assembly to create complex projects. I have designed several websites.

I have been composing for most of my life, and I take an interested in a wide variety of genres, from classical to jazz to pop to film music. I have taught tonal theory, post-tonal theory, and aural skills at the college level. Recently I have written pieces for Ensemble Dal Niente, Momenta Quartet, Imani Winds, and the IU Symphonic Band, and I have an upcoming commission for the IU New Music Ensemble. I am also a jazz pianist, classical violinist, and film composer.

I did my MM at IU Jacobs School of Music, where I helped teach aural skills and ear training, and I did my BA at Brown University, where I helped teach part-writing and counterpoint. I have years of experience with ear training, including advanced ear training (atonal dictation, complex rhythmic dictation, 4 part dictation). I am a professional composer, and I also play jazz piano and classical violin.

I began playing classical violin when I was three years old. I have played in a number of different chamber ensembles, symphonies, and string orchestras. I am also a skilled improviser, and I have experience playing in a Latin jazz ensemble.

Excellent Java tutor
