I have over twenty years of experience teaching English at the college level and have been privileged to help thousands of students become more effective readers and writers. My fields of expertise are Composition and Literature. I received a Ph.D. in English from the University of Denver, an MA in English and American Literature from Brandeis, and an MFA in Fiction Writing from Vermont College. I have had several short stories published in literary magazines and four plays produced Off-Off-Broadway.
My goal as a tutor is to empower my students to read comprehensively and to write with precision. I deeply value the process of guiding students to make new discoveries about language and providing them with the tools to communicate their best thoughts clearly.
My experience as a college English professor on the one hand, and a creative writer on the other has made me a tutor who is both intellectually rigorous and creative. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
