I hold a Masters of Science degree with dual certification in Special Education and General Education from Mercy College, New York State Certified content areas are in Special Education and Social Studies. My experience encompasses 15 years of teaching best practices in education to improve both behavioral and academic performances of Students with Disabilities in NYC public schools. As a Special Education Teacher, the scope of my teaching and learning philosophy is equally important ,and is rooted in the facilitation of student's learning in an authentic situation, and providing greater opportunities for self -discovery in learning things that are relevant to their life's and interest. All students can learn but not all students can learn in exactly the same way therefore I consistently engage in adapting and modifying the curriculum and instructional presentation to meet the preferred learning style and strengths of my students. Furthermore I include activities that engage all learning modalities such as art, music, and drama. What is more, I break activities down into smaller steps to give student greater opportunities for success; I slow the pace of instruction to provide more time for practice and reinforcement of specific skills; I also give students a variety of ways to demonstrate what they know, its also very important to note that I am very mindful of making abstract concepts into concrete learning experiences for each student.
Moreover, my professional training and expertise have prepared me to render instruction that is individualized, with a carefully sequenced series of educational tasks the student can already perform and gradually leading to more complex learning. My emphasis is based on the the stimulation and awakening of the child senses, the aim being to make the child more aware of and responsive to educational stimuli, and most of all tutoring in functioning skills.
My teaching practices includes strategies such as direct instruction, cooperative learning, inquiry based learning, independent study, hands-on activities, peer tutoring, modeling, role play, journals and writing and reading workshops. Instruction is immediate, individualized, urgent, relentless and goal oriented. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a Special Education/Social Studies Teacher who currently holds New York state professional teaching license in two content specialties, where I teach a self contained class to NYC Middle School children in all core subjects, including Social Studies on a daily basis. My experience as a teacher lies within the confines of preparing instructional materials and presentation to meet the preferred learning styles and strength of students with ADD/ADHD. I have derived a repertoire of skills, with a focus of rendering the best practices of the twenty first century in education.
