About Joanne

I tutor in Westchester County and some surrounding areas. I work and live in Westchester County and I am able to meet with students that are both near my place of work and near my place of residence.

I have been teaching for almost two decads and I love what I do. Helping students one on one is even more of a pleasure. Being able to see the students succeed in something they struggled with is a wonderful reward and fuels my enthusiasm and passion.

I have tutored for over 17 years preparing students for state exams as well as SAT subject tests. I have taught every science course offered by my schools. These courses include HS Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Earth Science, Forensics, Physical Science, and general middle school science.

I look forward to working with you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

The test consists of five prose passages, each one accompanied by multiple-choice test questions. Different passage types are included to provide variety.

Some questions refer to underlined portions of the passage and offer several alternatives to the underlined portion. You must decide which choice is most appropriate in the context of the passage.

Some questions ask about an underlined portion, a section of the passage, or the passage as a whole. You must decide which choice best answers the question posed.

Many questions include "NO CHANGE" to the underlined portion or the passage as one of the choices.

The questions are numbered consecutively. Each question number corresponds to an underlined portion in the passage or to a box located in the passage.

ADD/ADHD

In 11 years of teaching, I have had a wealth of experience with ADD and ADHD students. I was diagnosed with the disorder when I was younger in middle school. My son also has the disorder along with Autism. Most of my knowledge has been from working with the special education departments of previous schools to meet the needs of my inclusion class students. In these classes nearly half of my students were ADD or ADHD and received 504 accommodations. I work with students through redirection and focusing techniques. It is imperative to have an understanding of how the disorder effects the brain and different treatments that can help control or subdue the symptoms.

Chemistry

Chemistry teacher for 15 years

Organic Chemistry

My major in undergrad was Biochemistry. I successfully completed Organic Chemistry 1 and 2 with high marks. Given a syllabus and the proper materials, I can help you navigate your particular course and it's objectives.

Organic chemistry is a complex subject. Different colleges and courses focus on different aspects. The carbon backbone of these molecules provides for an exponential number of structural arrangements as the number of carbon atoms increase. Understanding how the bonding in these carbon compounds arrange, react, form and break is key to understanding this course.

Regents

I have taught the Regents curriculum for NYS for well over a decade. Science, math, and even global history have been subjects taught and tutored by me. Now with common core standards, these exams have changed. I am actively involved with training for the new standards that may be adopted by NYS as well.

TAKS

I am a curriculum specialist hired to increase science TAKS scores for grade 8. I am familiar with all science TAKS examinations
