About Karen

Hello.

I am a former Manhattanite who moved to New Paltz in November 2011 after leaving an editing job at the New York Daily News, where I worked for six years. I write for several top publications, including The New York Times, Conde Nast Traveler magazine and the Daily News, as well as local publications such as Chronogram and Ulster Magazine. I taught Introduction to Professional Writing at Marist College last fall and plan to teach on the college level again.

I attended a top private high school in Manhattan, followed by Johns Hopkins University, where I majored in English, and the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, from which I received a master's degree in journalism.

I have always loved reading and writing, and this shows in my test scores: I netted a whopping 730 on the verbal portion of the SAT.

It would be my pleasure to help your child fulfill his or her potential in reading and writing and achieve academic success.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I spent six years working as a copy editor at the New York Daily News and am well-versed enough in English writing and grammar to write a textbook. I taught Introduction to Professional Writing at Marist College, where I would point out errors in the textbook to my students.

Grammar

With many years of professional copy editing under my belt, I am an expert grammarian. I taught Introduction to Professional Writing at Marist College, where I would point out grammatical errors in the textbook to my students.

Literature

I majored in English at Johns Hopkins University, worked for four years as an editor at Publishers Weekly magazine, the bible of the publishing industry, and have written book reviews for many top publications, including The New York Times Book Review.

Proofreading

I am among the best proofreaders in my profession. I taught Introduction to Professional Writing at Marist College, where I would point out typos and other errors in the textbook to my students.
