About Hallie

Hello. I have been an Ivy-League educated private tutor for over 15 years. I graduated as salutatorian from Clarkstown High School South in West Nyack, N.Y., and received National Merit Commended Scholar Distinction. I then entered the University of Pennsylvania where I majored in the Biological Basis of Behavior and minored in Biology & Psychology. I graduated from UPENN with summa cum laude distinction. I obtained a graduate degree from UMDNJ, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, where I received my Master's of Science in Biomedical Sciences.

I am a college professor and college consultant who works with students in nearly any academic subject from pre-Kindegraten through elementary, middle, high school, college, and graduate school. I excel in tutoring students in academic subjects including Mathematics, the Sciences-Biology/Chemistry at any level and elementary physics, English, as well as many specialty subject areas-including Anatomy and Physiology at the college level.

Another one of my specialties is preparing students for Test Preparation at any age for standardized tests, including the PSAT, SAT, and ACT Exams, as well as SAT II subject exams for college preparation. Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have been teaching and tutoring students in ACT test prep for over a decade. The ACT English section is a favorite subject area of mine. For the ACT English section, we focus on grammar and usage, mechanics, style, and language utilization and analysis, including diction, syntax, and tone of the passage.

ACT Math

I have been teaching Mathematics to students for many years and have helped many students achieve high scores in core areas of Mathematics covered on the ACT Math exam, including PreAlgebra, Algebra I/II Trigonometry and Geometry.

I specialize in tutoring students of all ages and ability levels including gifted students and those with learning differences and accommodations of all types for the ACT Exam, including the Math section.

I am an international test prep expert for all sections of the ACT, including the ACT Math section. I work with students on mastering strategies, mathematical content including pinpointing and mastering areas of mathematical weakness. We also cover timing, qualifying and understanding question types and using different strategies as pertains to question types. I keep track of student progress to strive for improvement and target scores.

ACT Reading

I am an international test prep expert for all sections of the ACT, including the ACT Reading section. I work with students on mastering strategies, timing, qualifying and understanding question types and using different strategies as pertains to question types. I keep track of student progress in this area to strive for improvement.

ACT Science

I have been tutoring students in ACT prep, including the Science section, for over a decade. The Science portion of the ACT is one of my stronger subjects, since I have a Master's degree in Science. I work with students on mastering strategies, timing, qualifying and understanding question types and using different strategies as pertains to question types. I keep track of student progress in this area to strive for target score achievement. Numerous students have attained perfect scores in the Science section. Tutoring for the ACT Science section involves critical reading strategies, interpretation of information provided in graphs, tables, and written English pertaining to science experimental paradigms created by the ACT makers. I encourage students to rely on the passage provided to obtain information to answer the questions rather than solely on their outside knowledge of the Sciences.

ADHD

I have experience tutoring students with a diagnosis of ADD/ADHD. I have extensive experience tutoring students with learning differences and special needs, especially students diagnosed with ADD/ADHD.

I frequently work with students with IEPs and 504, modified curriculums, as well as inclusion courses. I have experience with processing disorders (auditory/hearing impairment, reading, etc), Autism Spectrum (ASD), ADD/ADHD, and dyslexia, to name a few.

I have consulted with an ADD/ADHD coach and life skills trainer in order to address the best approach and methodology for tutoring students with ADD/ADHD and general learning differences.

I have developed a special strategy and method of teaching students with ADD/ADHD that engages his/her attention and allows for built-in short breaks for the student to regain his/her attention span.

Algebra 1

Algebra I is one of my strongest subjects. I have been tutoring in Algebra I for 10 years with experience as an Algebra teacher at a learning academy, private school, and as a private tutor/educator.

I am very qualified to teach Algebra I to students. I received an "A" in each course in high school through Calculus B/C, earning a 5 on the AP exams as well as assisting with college math courses including Algebra 1.

Algebra 2

I tutor students in Algebra II at the high school level as well as AlgebraII/Trig and college Algebra. Some topics and content areas covered in the Algebra II course include linear relations, composition of functions, polynomial, radical and quadratic functions, as well as exponential and log functions. Other content areas included in Algebra II tutoring may consist of systems of equations, inequalities, rational expressions, exponents, sequences/series, and conics (ellipses, parabolas, hyperbolas).

American History

As a student, I always received As in my history courses including social students, American History, European History, and the AP History courses. I have also tutored students in history for the past 5 years. I am qualified to teach American History to a student through the college level.

Anatomy

I am a Professor of the Sciences who teaches Anatomy & Physiology courses. I have tutored numerous students in Anatomy & Physiology.

Astronomy

In every subject that I tutor, I offer students an individualized study plan including study skills, strategies, as well as core content areas. I tailor my tutoring style to best suite each student's individual needs. I enjoy learning about and teaching astronomy.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have extensive experience tutoring students with learning differences and special needs including those with ASD includIng high functioning ASD. Biology

Biology is one of my strongest academic subjects.
My expertise and educational experience in Biology includes receiving an undergraduate degree in the Biological Basis of Behavior from UPENN with minors in Biology & Psychology. I have taken numerous introductory and upper-level high school Biology courses in both college and graduate school.

I teach Biology courses as a professor at the college level.

Botany

As a Biological Basis of Behavior Major at the University of Pennsylvania, with a minor in Biology, I took many course components on Botany. I also took portions of Botany as a graduate student and am qualified to teach Botany to a student.

Business

I took "College Business" at Clarkstown High School South and received an "A" in the course. I am eligible to teach College Business to students. I have taught business to several students over the past decade.

Career Development

I have been coaching students on career choices and career placement in different industries passed on their qualifications and personalities for over 3 years. I have been consulting with students in Career Development and also received formal training in Career Development via a Career Development Coach. I am qualified to tutor students in Career Development.

Chemistry

I took AP Chemistry in high school and received an A in the course and a 5 on the exam. I also took chemistry courses in college and graduate school, including general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry, etc.

College Counseling

I have been counseling students in the college admissions process, essay writing and technique, entrance examination strategies and testing, as well as other aspects associated with College Counseling for over a decade. As an Ivy-League alumnae, I am very qualified to tutor a student in the subject of College Counseling. I have received College Counseling training informally as well.

Cooking

I can cook many meals with chicken, vegetables, pasta, fish, meat, etc. I have been cooking for a decade.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored many students in all subjects in grades k-6 and am qualified to teach children any subject at this grade level.

Elementary Math

I have been tutoring students in Elementary Math for a number of years now, both at a learning academy and privately. I have tutored numerous students in grades 1-6 in Math. I have emphasized fractions, decimals, mixed numbers, word problems, and other concepts some students may find challenging.

Elementary Science

The extensive education that I have received in the Sciences enables me to excel in tutoring students science at the Elementary school level. I possess a general knowledge of material covered in science in elementary school, and I excel at teaching the Sciences to students of all educational and grade levels.

English

I have been taking Honors English courses since 8th grade. I took AP English Language and AP English Literature at Clarkstown High School South in West Nyack, NY, and received 5s on these exams. I have tutored students in various aspects of the English language, both privately and in a learning academy.

ESL/ESOL

I have taken all high school courses in upper level English through AP English Literature and AP English Language, on which I received a 5 on the AP examinations. I have taught many hispanic individuals how to speak English due to my bilingualism. I am able to teach basic English to students of other cultures and languages. I am very qualified to teach the English Language and English as a Second Language to students.

Flute

I played flute from 4th grade through college. I was privately instructed for many years and competed annually in the New York State solo competion aka NYSSMA. I was selected as a 1st flute in the band, orchestra, and marching band and had some solos throughout my high school years. I also attended a private arts camp where I played flute and piccolo for the band, orchestra, and as an orchestral member in campers' renditions of Broadway plays (I performed in the orchestra for Oklahoma, among others. I also tutored young campers in private for 3 years while attending French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts.

GED

My educational background and knowledge allows me to excel at teaching students who are studying for the GED exam. I address content areas of concern, as well as study skills and strategies to help students achieve the highest grade possible on their GED exam.

I have many resources at my disposal, including resources I have created myself, to help students achieve the highest possible score on the exam.

General Music

I have been studying music since grade 4. I have played flute and piccolo for over 18 years. I am well-versed in many different areas of music. I enjoy music as a hobby and can teach a student the essentials of music, whether it be classical or of another genre.

Genetics

I have a BA in the Biological Basis of Behavior from UPENN. This major combines Biology, Psychology, and Neuroscience. I took many courses with Genetics components and a course on genetics throughout my college and graduate school years. I am qualified to teach genetics to a student and have tutored genetics previously. I received both my undergraduate and graduate degrees in Biology, which concentrates invariably on genetics as well as other subjects.

Geometry

Geometry is one of my strongest subjects. I have always excelled in math and the sciences. I took advanced math courses throughout high school and college and took AP Calculus B/C, in which I received an "A".

When teaching students Geometry, I emphasize the important topics of triangles (properties and congruence), parallel lines and the coordinate plane, including the distance, midpoint formulas, relationships amongst and between angles, quadrilaterals and polygons, as well as similar relationships in triangles (including right triangles) and polygons. Geometry also includes transformations in the coordinate plane and a general introduction to topics covered in Trigonometry.

I have many resources at my disposal, including resources I have created myself, to help students achieve the highest possible score. I am very qualified to teach geometry to students and have done so both privately for many years.

Grammar

I am certified to teach English grammar to students and have been teaching students grammar for many years. I have always excelled at grammar and have always received As in English courses.

GRE

I took the GRE for graduate school admissions and did well on the exam. I am qualified to teach the GRE to students. I have previously tutored a student in the GRE and welcome the opportunity to tutor more students in the GRE.

ISEE

I have tutored students for the ISEE/SSAT exams for private school admissions. I tutor students for the Lower Level, Middle Level, and Upper Level ISEE/SSAT exams. I have created some of my own resources to prepare students for the exam and tailor the teaching approach to the individual student's needs. The students I have prepared for the ISEE have done well on the exam and have been appreciative of my help. I am willing and qualified to teach the ISEE to students throughout the academic year.

Law

I have worked per diem at a law office since 1999 and am quite familiar with the basics of the law. I can tutor students in introductory law. I also took Legal Studies 101 at the Wharton School of Business.

Literature

I am well-versed in English Literature and received an A in AP English Literature and a 5 on the AP Literature exam. I am qualified to tutor students in English Literature. I am also an avid reader of literature.

Marketing

I took College Marketing as a senior at Clarkstown High School South. I received an "A" in College Marketing. I also took similar business courses in high school and college. I am qualified to teach marketing through the college level to a student.

MCAT

I took the Kaplan MCAT course, studied for the MCAT for several years and took the exam; however, I cancelled my MCAT score. Regardless of whether or not I scored on the MCAT, I have tutored students in MCAT subjects --Biological and Physical Sciences--for many years. I am fully qualified to teach the MCAT to students and have review books as well.

Microbiology

I took Microbiology as a graduate student studying for my Master's Degree in Biomedical Sciences. I took Microbiology 101 and 102 and received and "A" and a "B" in the courses. I also took components of Microbiology as an undergraduate student at the University of Pennsylvania. I am qualified to teach Microbiology to students.

Microsoft Excel

I have been using Microsoft Excel since college to create spreadsheets. I also used Excel as a work study student in graduate school. I am well-versed in Excel and can tutor a student in Microsoft Excel.

Microsoft Outlook

I have used Microsoft Outlook for many years as a student and as a professional to help manage my daily schedule, my appointments, and email. I am well-versed in how to use this program and can teach it to an individual.

Microsoft Windows

I have taken computer courses on Microsoft Windows since high school. I have taught students how to use Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Applications such as Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, and other basic computer function in Windows.

Microsoft Word

I have been using Word since high school and throughout college and graduate schools. I have used Word as the template for writing papers for over a decade and have also created tables and graphics using Word. I have used iWord both professionally and as a student.

Music History

As an undergraduate student at the University of Pennsylvania, I took Music40 or Music History. It was a very interesting course where I learned much about music history, music theory, music composition, composers, etc. I received an "A" in this course and would be happy to teach Music History to other students.

Nutrition

I took Nutrition 101 and received an A. I am qualified to teach introductory nutrition to a student.

Pharmacology

I took pharmacology 101 at the University of Pennsylvania and received an A. I have taken other courses in graduate school in pharmacology and am well-versed in the subject. I have tutored several students in pharmacology. I have also taken neuropsychopharmacology courses.

Philosophy

At the University of Pennsylvania, I took Philosophy 101 and received an A in this course. I am well-versed in the basic ideas and beliefs of philosophy and I can teach a student introductory philosophy.

Phonics

As a tutor for over a decade, I have tutored many young students in phonics. As a student who has taken AP English courses and English courses at the University of Pennsylvania, I am highly trained in the ability to teach phonics to individuals. I received an A in all my English courses.

Physics

I am a professor of the Sciences with expertise in Biology and Chemistry at all levels and basic physics courses (up to Physics I). I am most comfortable with physics through high school regular and honors courses. I do not tutor higher level physics courses or AP Physics.

Prealgebra

I tutor many students in Pre-Algebra, and they successfully improve their grades as a result of my general teaching/tutoring abilities and knowledge of Mathematics.

I specialize in relating these topics, which include algebraic expressions and algebraic equations, arithmetic, proportions & percents, linear functions, inequalities, determining relationships such as area, volume, and circumference of figures including solids, triangles, circles, and quadrilaterals. I also help students in Pre-Algebra with polynomial function operations, exponents, radicals, systems of equations, and word problems.

I received an A in Pre-Algebra in school and took honors math courses and advanced math courses including AP Calculus B/C in high school. In college I continued my higher education in Math by taking a Statistics 101 course at the Wharton School of Business.

PSAT

I have been tutoring students in the PSAT for a number of years. All of my PSAT students have always done well on the exam as a result of preparing with me. I am willing and qualified to tutor the PSAT.

Psychology

As a college student at UPENN, I minored in Psychology. I took many psychology courses and received A's in all psychology courses I took. I am qualified to teach introductory, abnormal, developmental, and advanced psychology.

Reading

I am an experienced reading tutor. I have taught many elementary school, middle school, and high school students in the subject of reading. I have helped the students improve their reading comprehension, vocabulary, and ability to read and write.

Regents

I took all courses required by New York State's Regents Diploma Board. I took all honors courses and 11 AP courses in high school. I received all "A"s on my Regents Exams in MathI/II (Algebra), English, Social Studies, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Spanish, U.S. History,and other Regents Courses. I am qualified to teach all Regents courses to high school students.

SAT Math

I am an experienced test prep tutor for all subjects of the SAT Exam, including the SAT Math sections, which contain multiple choice and free-response questions. I help students prepare for all aspects of SAT Math, including any areas of Mathematics covered on the exam that the student identifies as a weak or problematic area.

I have tutored and currently tutor numerous students for the SAT Exam and have helped all students increase their performances from their baseline and initial practice test scores.

SAT Reading

I have been tutoring students in the Reading Section of the SAT for a number of years. I am an experienced academic and test prep tutor who prepares students for all aspects (sections) of the SAT exam.

My students have done well on the Reading Section of the SATs as a result of tutoring. I tutor students for all sections of the SAT exam and help students prepare for the SAT Reading portions of the SAT exam. Specifically with regards to the Reading sections, I help students with Reading Comprehension & aspects involving vocabulary expansion in preparation for the SAT. I encourage students to keep a running SAT vocabulary notebook consisting of words that we identify during the course of our SAT studies.

SAT Writing

I have been tutoring students in the SAT Writing portion of the exam for a few years. I have had success tutoring students for the SAT and am qualified to do so. I prepare students for all aspects of the SAT exam, especially the Writing sections, involving the Essay, as well as multiple choice questions on the tested topic areas of sentence errors, paragraphs errors, and improving sentences. I currently tutor students for the SAT Writing portion of the exam, and my past SAT Writing students have all increased their overall scores in the Writing Section and on the Essay as a result of my tutoring.

Social Studies

I have taken Social Studies courses throughout my education. I have always received As in Social Studies in middle school and high school. In my studies of History throughout my schooling, I have always received As. I am competent to teach Social Studies to a student.

Sociology

I took Sociology 101 and received an A and am qualified to teach Introductory Sociology.

Spanish
