About Michael

Are you struggling with the concepts of Music Theory? Want to learn or improve your craft of songwriting? Do you feel you could use additional help with learning an instrument? If you answered, 'yes' to any of these questions then look no further. Allow me to be your personal music coach. I have a Bachelors of Music degree. I teach songwriting, music theory, drums, piano, voice, guitar, sight reading, harmony, and ear training.

As a lover of music and the arts, I ventured into Musical Theater as well as playing with bands at an early age. I've performed across the country and in such prestigious venues as Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. In high school and college, I was in vocal ensembles and concert bands in where I began to tutor my classmates in music theory. Even before leaving high school, I began giving music lessons to students and have been doing so for the past 15 years.

I am very passionate about songwriting as well. I won many songwriting contests including one national competition for CBS. In 2008, CBS flew me out to L.A. to write for Reality TV giant, Mark Burnett. There I had the opportunity to work with other talented songwriters and found it surreal when I performed in front of Gene Simmons of Kiss.

Very professional and yet down-to-earth I try to be respectful of your time and ask the same from you. Please give me 24 hour notice if you have to cancel a lesson. I have one day a month reserved for all makeup lessons. Do you live out of state? No problem! I encourage online lessons to anyone anywhere in the world. If you live locally, great! I can come to you.

Bottom Line: I explain music in a fun and encouraging way. Can't read music? Let me show you some tricks so that you can. I have all this knowledge and practical exercises I want to share with you. My method of teaching is specifically geared towards those who play by ear. I teach practical applications for you to go out there and perform.

I look forward to being your personal music coach.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drums

My preferred method of teaching drums to a student is dividing up the lesson into sections. I begin with warm up exercises, then reading music, and then show the student how to play by ear. Using these methods surround the student with proper instruction that is easily applied so that they may practice throughout the week between lessons.

My custom tailored lesson plans vary student to student. Some students do not want to learn how to read music. While I always encourage it, I do not force it upon them as I have taught students to play drums in the absence of reading. I find the Breeze-Easy Method book of drums by John Kinyon very helpful as supplemental reading material.

I always teach in a fun and encouraging way. I have a number of ways to teach drums as everyone learns differently.

Ear Training

Ear training is such a powerful part of my teaching process for any instrument. But, if any student wants to focus entirely on this subject I am thrilled to teach it, as the importance of ear training is largely overlooked.

I have my Bachelors of Music from Five Towns College. I have been teaching ear training methods for almost 10 years now.

I teach ear training using a variety of methods and instruments. Many times a students ear becomes used to hearing one particular instrument and does really well with one but poor on another. To make the students ear more astute, I provide ear training on a variety of instruments.

Music Theory

I have my Bachelors of Music from Five Towns College. I have been teaching methods of music theory for almost 10 years now.

My method of teaching music theory is a combination of sheet music with and ear training. Students are not only learning how things appear on the staff, but also how things sound, which is equally important. It's fun and educational for the student to show off their new found skills.

Piano

I have over 10 years of experience with playing and teaching piano. I have my Bachelors of Music from Five Towns College.

My custom tailored lesson plans vary student to student. Some students do not want to learn how to read music. While I always encourage it, I do not force it upon them as I have taught students to play piano in the absence of reading. I find the John W. Schaum Piano course very helpful as supplemental reading material.

I always teach in a fun and encouraging way. I have a number of ways to teach piano as everyone learns differently.

Sight Singing

I have my Bachelors of Music from Five Towns College. I have been teaching methods of sight singing for almost 10 years now.

My method of teaching sight singing is combining sheet music with solfege. I often combine their new skills to sing some popular hits on the radio using solfege. It's fun and educational for the student to show off their new skills.

Songwriting

I have my Bachelors of Music from Five Towns College. I have been writing songs since I was a teenager and have been successful at it.

My signature method has helped so many students over the years. Unless the student wants to learn a lot more, I only teach what the student needs to know about music theory so that they can become better songwriters. Using music theory is a secret weapon when it comes to teaching songwriting.

I have written many songs and won a songwriting contest for CBS back in 2008.

Voice (Music)

My preferred method of teaching voice to a student is dividing up the lesson into sections. The very first lesson is more explanation than singing. I do this because many beginners and even experienced singers have been told or taught incorrect and harmful methods of singing. I explain it so that the student can truly find his/her voice.

I begin with warm up exercises, then sight-reading music, then some solfege and then we sing a song of their choice or one of my choosing. Using these methods surround the student with proper instruction that is easily applied so that they may practice throughout the week between lessons.

I have years of knowledge and experience in voice. I have my Bachelor's Degree in Music from Five Towns College. I have been singing in many ensembles and bands since I was in my teens. As a lifelong student, I believe in always getting better, which is why I still take lessons, read books, and take classes on the latest and best ways of teaching singing.

My custom tailored lesson plans vary student to student. Some students do not want to learn how to read music. While I always encourage it, I do not force it upon them as I have taught students to sing correctly in the absence of reading.

I always teach in a fun and encouraging way. I have a number of ways to teach voice as everyone learns differently.
