I have my bachelor's degree in History and 12+ years of experience. In addition, I have completed my Masters program in Adolescent Education and I have my teaching certification in Social Studies. I have taught middle school Social Studies for the past 13 years and I believe that I have the ability to teach high school Social Studies as well. In addition, I have taught middle school Math for the past two years. I have experience working with all different types of students of different backgrounds, including students with IEPs. I also have two letters of reference that can be made available upon request.
My goals as a teacher are to prepare my students for success in college, inspire their love of learning, and to foster responsible citizenship.
I always have my students’ best interest at heart. Therefore, I have extremely high expectations for my students. I expect nothing but the best of my students, both academically and behaviorally. I hold my students accountable for those expectations, while being fair, using a balanced approach to learning, and most of all collaborating with fellow teachers, students, the administration, and parents. I fully understand that as a core subject teacher that there is more to my job then just teaching the particular subject, such as, reading and writing skills.
I have taken numerous graduate courses towards my Masters that have provided me with countless techniques to help my students in a variety of ways. I have learned a variety of ways to incorporate cross curricular activities to better enhance my students learning experience. For example, the use of subject related books to help with reading skills, document based essays to improve writing skills, or the use of the internet and SmartBoard technology.
My graduate training has also allowed me to become quite familiar with Bloom’s Taxonomy, which in turn, teaches the students to think on a higher level. The use of Bloom’s Taxonomy provides the student with a more balanced set of skills and therefore, becomes a well-rounded student.
Finally, I was once asked a question if I thought that I was a caring or strict teacher. My answer was that I do not believe the two are mutually exclusive. If you are a strict teacher and take the time to discipline students for any type of misbehavior, you are showing them that you care for their success in learning and in life. If you choose not to act when appropriate, you are doing the student a disservice because that particular student is not going to have the same chance to succeed as the students that are behaving and are doing what is expected of them. So, it is my belief that, not only am I a strict and caring teacher, but I am also a fair teacher.
My belief is to foster a student who is well-rounded as a student and as an individual by providing them with a multitude of skills necessary to be successful in college and in life.
