I love teaching and helping children learn. The smile and success achieved by children is so rewarding. I believe all children have the potential for learning. I will incorporate as many methods as needed to make sure there is success.
I have a BA degree with Certification in Early Childhood and Elementary Education and am highly qualified for Pre-School through grade 6. I have taught 20 years in a public school and am familiar with the Common Core standards.
I have taught preschool through second grade. I have done private tutoring as well as bedside instruction for children too ill to attend school. I have experience using several different types of Language Arts programs, including phonics and whole language based. I have training in the Ortan Gilligham Phonics program as well as traditional phonics. Comprehension and fluency in reading are the basis of literacy that needs to be developed and mastered. I have experience with Houghton Mifflin, Pearson, and Journeys reading programs.
Math at the elementary school level should be hands-on with the focus on understanding the foundation and creating a strong foundation for success at the higher levels. I have taught first and second grades with all my math lessons focusing on the understanding of the processes behind addition, subtraction, word problems, as well as mental math. Using manipulative to teach math makes it fun as well as concrete, which is what I feel is needed at the elementary levels.
Lessons will be challenging but never overwhelming or reaching a frustration level.
Tutoring can be done at a library or a quiet place of your choice. Lessons usually last one hour; however, the time can be adjusted depending on the lesson and the needs of the student. I have a 24-hour cancellation policy, which can also be adjusted and the lesson being rescheduled if needed. I am flexible and will work hard to have your child achieve success.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping your child grow and learn. I love teaching and helping children learn. The smile and success achieved by children is so rewarding. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have NJ Certification in Early Childhood and Elementary Ed. and have taught 1st and 2nd grades for 15 years at Ogdensburg Elementary School. I used a variety of methods as the curriculum keeps changing. I taught Reading and Phonics using Pearson, Houghton Mifflin, as well as Words in Color.
A writing workshop was used as well as traditional writing in regard to penmanship and stories, sentence structure, and English Grammar.
Science and History were taught hands on at the elementary level.
I have taught preschool, kindergarten, first and second grade with emphasis on phonemes and phonics. We did Letter of the Week in preschool and kindergarten as well as sight words. I used the McGraw Hill phonics as well as training in the Orton Gillingham method of teaching Phonics. Games were played often so children would make the sound letter connection to begin reading as well as learn all the rules in the English Language.
Sight words were taught along with phonics.
