About Brittany

Hi! My name is Brittany and I have been teaching for over 9 years. I have a wide range of teaching experiences from high school English to SAT preparation to theatre to Special Education English classes, with some middle school (English, Spanish and History) thrown in. I try my best to make learning enjoyable for students and to provide them with strategies for learning that they can apply to their content areas to help them be their most successful. I know that each student learns differently and I work to tailor things to the needs of my students and meet them at their ability levels.

I have been in love with the English language, reading and writing as long as I can remember; it seemed only natural for me to become an English teacher. I have worked with students on all levels (Elementary - Adult) and do my best to try and help my students succeed and learn to love English, and all its sub-topics, as much as I do. And as an actress I have a special place for public speaking and theater, as well as a first-person perspective regarding how to approach those topics.

Teaching is a passion of mine and I would be so happy if I could work with you. I know that school and learning can be tiresome, but I do my best to make learning accessible. Let's do this together!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I, too, suffer from ADD and have learned many different ways to cope and I often share them with my students. I also have an MS in Special Education and have been successful in many of the approaches I take with my students.

Bible Studies

I have attended Catholic school for my entire school career and have been required to take numerous classes concerning the Bible. I also use the Bible in my English classes as examples of creation stories and other stories that shape society and culture.

English

I have been teaching English for over 8 years. I have a deep love of literature and writing, and love to work with students to bring that love to them. I have knowledge of a wide variety of topics in English including literature, writing, and grammar.

Public Speaking

I have taught Public Speaking on the high school level, as well as through theater. I am an actress so I understand what it takes to be an effective public speaker; the work of a teacher also allows me to understand what makes an effective public speaker.

Regents

I have experience preparing students with multiple regents examinations including English and History Regents. I also have experience working with students on test preparation skills, test-taking skills, writing, and study skills. I know the different sections of these tests, as well as the content addressed on the exams, and have access to materials that will help students prepare for these exams.

Social Studies

I have taught Social Studies on both the middle school level, as well as on the high school level in a self contained Special Education classroom. I have worked with students to pass the middle school social studies tests and the high school "social studies" based regents exams with great success.

Special Needs

I have an MS in Special Education, as well as a BA in English. I have worked for several years as a Special Education teacher and have been successful in many of the approaches I take with my students. I am also certified by NYS in Students with Disabilities.

Study Skills

I have taught study skills for several years, focusing on organization, breaking down of major tasks in smaller, more manageable tasks, and taking one thing at a time. We focus on good study habits and how to approach homework, as well as how to approach textbook. We also address things such as how to properly read a textbook, highlight important information and synthesize that information into useful sentences to be used later, in addition to many other items. I have been teaching for over 9 years. I have a wide range of teaching experiences from high school English to SAT preparation to theatre to Special Education English classes, with some middle school (English, Spanish and History) thrown in.

Theatre

I have worked in theatre for over 15 years as an actor, producer, and crew member in every aspect of production. I have taught theatre on every grade level and have mounted a production on every grade level as well. I have had students go on to work on Broadway, at the Globe Theatre in London and work beside me on stage.

Fantastic tutor, relates well to students, friendly, insightful, patient, fun — Brittany tutored my 14 year old son in English, he was 2 years behind in his reading level. My son was distraught about getting a tutor but after meeting Brittany that was no longer an issue. She helped him organized his thoughts and encouraged him to expand his opinions. I was grateful for Brittany, she made it possible for my son to complete English assignments with ease. She is an exceptiona ...
