About Iris

I am a permanently certified special ed art teacher and have been teaching at the same NYC school for the past eighteen years. I am extremely creative and expressive and like to pass that on to my students by being an important role model in their lives. For some of my students art is their only means of expressing themselves and they do it quite well. All subject areas are all wrapped up in one through art.

My students challenges consist of an autistic and multiply handicapped population. I counsel parents as well to give direction and support which is beneficial for everyone. If we are in it together we can give our students what they need and deserve. Each student is treated on an individual basis according to their individual functioning and skill levels which are assessed right from the beginning. Prior knowledge and a baseline is taken. Progress is made and data is taken and provided. Please feel free to message me so I can provide examples of my students progress based on your child's challenges.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have been working in the NYC BOE school system for almost 18 years as a special education teacher.I have also worked with the early intervention agencies when I took a childcare leave of absence. I am permanently certified as a special education teacher (K-12) and I graduated with a Masters degree from Queens College. I am currently using the Mayor Johnson system through board maker. We are using the TEACH methodology system to aid in the communication for our non-verbal students as well as our verbal students. The TEACH system has been successful with children with Autism and ADHD. It helps to know what is coming next on their schedule and aides with visual cues for directions. This is both predictable and concrete.
