About Adam

I worked as a journalist for The Associated Press for 23 1-2 years, right out of college. I was Assistant Sports Editor at the UMass Collegian, and while an avid sports fan, I'm still versed in many subjects related to academics. I have an 11-year-old daughter who I help with homework every day and she gets excellent grades on her report card. At the AP, I worked in statistics, compiling and sorting through numbers to make columns, standings and box scores add up properly. I graduated to writing and editing stories. I was a night and overnight supervisor in the sports department, often alone when breaking news came in the mornings. I have excellent spelling skills, rarely even bother with spellcheck. Some of my co-workers called me Eagle Eye, for my ability to proofread and notice mistakes when other editors missed them. I don't tolerate slang on the page, or if possible, in every day conversation. The English language has worked well for hundreds of years, it's just lazy to shorten words and phrases nowadays.

I recently worked as a Driver's Ed instructor, teaching over 100 students how to drive in anticipation of their road tests and getting their licenses. Most of my students were successful in doing so, and I received thanks from several of their parents for helping them to do so. This job required lots of patience, as driving with teenagers in sometimes adverse conditions could be hazardous. I hope my words here will convince you that I am both qualified and deserving of your children's time and effort.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I have great knowledge of, and interest in American History. I am constantly reading books about the subject, as well as watching documentaries to further my experience. I am currently helping my 13-year-old daughter with her homework, and hope that can translate to helping your child with their studies as well.

Baseball

Having played baseball and softball since I was a kid, I have vast experience with the game. My first job at The Associated Press was as a baseball dictationist. This involved compiling boxscores and stats from live game action, updating standings and statistics as the night went on, and taking dictation from baseball writers at MLB games. Eventually I went to MLB games and wrote stories myself, interviewed players, and edited stories from other writers from around the country.

English

As a former editor for The Associated Press and an English minor in college, I have vast experience with reading, writing, comprehension, and putting together complete and coherent sentences. I have worked here for a few years with students from grade school to grad school to guide them towards their goals. I also work with my 13-year-old daughter on her homework each day, helping her achieve honors classes throughout middle school. I hope I can offer the same help to your child as well.

Grammar

As a former editor for The Associated Press and an English minor in college, I have vast experience with reading, writing, comprehension, and putting together complete and coherent sentences. I was known as Eagle Eye at my former job for my attention to the slightest details. I have worked here for a few years with students from grade school to grad school to help them achieve their goals. Proofreading

As a former writer and copy editor for The Associated Press and an English minor in college, I have vast experience with reading, writing, comprehension, and correcting both spelling errors and grammatical mistakes. I work with my 13-year-old daughter on her homework each day, pushing her to achieve honors status throughout middle school. I hope I can offer the same help to your child as well.

Reading

I was known as Eagle Eye at The Associated Press for my attention to the slightest details. I'm also a vast reader, usually taking on two books at a time, in addition to my many magazine subscriptions and various blogs and articles I peruse on the Internet. I'm bothered when I read typos and don't care for slang at all, even in instant messaging and E-Mail. I can help with comprehension as well as grammar, as I have with my 13-year-old daughter, pushing her to honors status throughout middle school. I hope I can offer the same help to your child.

Spelling

Since I finished second in my school's spelling bee as a youngster, I've always been conscious of getting words spelled correctly. Especially at my long-time job with The Associated Press as an editor, as well as a freelance writer. I also work with my 13-year-old daughter on her homework each day (spelling is one of her strongest subjects), pushing her to achieve honors status throughout middle school. I hope I can offer the same help to your child as well.

Writing

As a former writer and editor for The Associated Press and a Journalism major and English minor in college, I have vast experience with reading, writing, comprehension, and putting together complete and coherent sentences. Several of my articles can be found on the Internet, and I also did freelance work and maintained a blog for awhile. I have worked here for the last few years with students from grade school to grad school, helping them achieve their goals.
