I'm a chemical engineer, a job which requires that I be extremely knowledgeable in complex math and science, but I also have a passion for teaching these subjects. I've been tutoring various levels of Chemistry, Calculus, Algebra, and Trigonometry for over five years and have successfully tutored more than a hundred students during that time. During college at UConn, I ran group lessons in our library tutoring center, and since graduating I have focused on private one-on-one tutoring in all of these subjects.
What I've realized after working with so many struggling students and families is that they often carry a false feeling they simply aren't good at Chemistry or Math. In reality, and in my personal experiences, I've demonstrated that almost anyone can perfect these complex subjects as long as they have the right teacher.
When I start working with a new student, I spend time understanding what their current level is and where their pitfalls are, but most importantly I focus on WHY they are experiencing confusion. Most students have great difficulty with Calculus, for instance, not because Calculus is impossible to understand but because they are lacking some prior foundations of Algebra, or even basic arithmetic, and that is causing them problems and it is this underlying problem that I work to address.
Using this technique of determining the root cause of a student's problem, taking a step back and addressing this missing foundation, I am always able to successfully teach the most complex subjects to those who struggle most. I have never worked with anyone whose grade and attitude I haven't been able to turn around, and I'd like to do the same for you. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have extensive experience studying and tutoring all levels of Algebra. Understanding Algebra is the essential building block to virtually all future math and science courses, and unfortunately it is a lack of a strong Algebraic foundation that leads to students' difficulties with future courses. I tailor every lesson specific to a student's needs based on their level, and ensure we never move on to the next topic until they have demonstrated a complete understanding of the current one.
I have studied and tutored Calculus I, II, III and Differential Equations. Understanding these subjects is one thing, but being able to tutor them and convey the information in a way a student can understand is a completely different story. I have done both successfully in my career, and I am required to understand the concepts in my everyday work as well as with the students I teach.
I have extensive experience studying and tutoring general chemistry, AP chemistry, college level organic chemistry and physical chemistry. As a chemical engineer, I was required to proficient in all of these subjects as a prerequisite for my engineering curriculum, and I use all of them in my daily work as a chemical engineer.
