I miss my students!!!! I just retired after teaching for 34 years and I miss the interaction I had with my students. During my teaching career, I taught high school English, social studies, literacy K-12, and elementary subjects. At various times I tutored privately.
I have the knowledge and experience needed to ensure that my students passed the required NYS mandated testing in reading, English, global studies, and US history.
I feel that ability to read and write is crucial in today's ever changing world.
Each student learns at their own rate and should not be penalized within the classroom. Teachers today have so many items on their agenda, that a struggling student may be left behind. This is where I come in as an aide to the student and the teacher realizing the same ultimate goal. I miss my students!!!! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
American History covers the pre-Columbian era to present day. It's important for students to understand the nuances that have led to present conditions and situations. The American History Regents covers these aspects , along with the DBQ which has the student analyze a topic and support it with interpreted documents. The thematic essay allows the student to focus on a given topic which could range from the Civil War, to Court cases, to environmental issues.
I taught reading in grades 2-6, elementary math and science. I coordinated reading and spelling lessons along with social studies.
As a certified reading teacher, phonics was highly emphasized as a core area to teach beginner readers.
I taught public speaking to 12th graders as part of the 12th grade English elective for 10 years.
I have literacy (reading) certification for birth to 12th grade. I taught reading for 6 years in the elementary school and 8 years on the high school level. I believe that reading is the single most important area to be proficient in. I try to make reading fun and relevant.
Study skills are an important part of being able to become organized and using that organization to pass a subject. Various ways to do this is by the use of flash cards, time lines, and Venn diagrams. Breaking a particular item into small blocks also helps the student perform much better and become more confident in that subject.
