Pennsylvania State University (Biology)
Utah State University (Master's)
I am a home-school mom, having taught my three children for the last nine years through levels K-8th grade. I am capable of tutoring in all subjects (with the exception of foreign language), however, I have the strongest background in science and math. I have also taught children in a classroom setting in a local home-school coop and also as a religious ed teacher for the past 4 years at our church. As a mother and community volunteer, I have many years' experience working with children of a variety of ages, abilities, and backgrounds. I do not believe there is one right way to learn or one method that works for every child, and I am always open to seeking new ways to help a child understand a subject and excel.
I have a strong academic and work experience background. I received my BS degree in Biology/Wildlife Science from Pennsylvania State University and my MS degree in Wildlife Science from Utah State University. Through the years I have worked as a biologist for a variety of private, state and federal agencies including the National Forest Service, National Park Service, Nature Conservancy, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Virginia Tech University.
My job skills include being very well organized, punctual, and having good oral and written communication skills.
Away from work and teaching, I enjoy running, exercising, gardening, raising animals, researching family history, reading and baking/cooking.
I look forward to meeting you and learning together.
I believe that the abilities to read and write proficiently are the most important skills a child learns. It is the stepping stone to all other learning. As a homeschool mom I have successfully taught my children to read at 4 years of age. I stress grammar, spelling, and vocabulary as well as writing skills. I have strong knowledge of the parts of speech, diagramming sentences, punctuation, capitalization and proper usage.
Because of my academic and employment background as a wildlife biologist, I have strong theoretical and practical knowledge particularly in the life sciences, but also have experience in physical science and chemistry as well. I have taught math skills from the K- algebra levels and have academic background in higher level math such as geometry, trigonometry, and calculus.
If you are looking for some additional help in your subjects, need assistance in writing a paper, completing homework, or preparing for a test, please feel free to contact me. I will be glad to help you. Tutoring can last a few sessions or the whole year. I am flexible with meeting your scheduling needs. I am looking forward to meeting you. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a BS degree in Biology and a MS in Wildlife Science. I have homeschooled my three children from grades Kindergarten through 8th grade in all subjects including LA, math, history, science, health, geography, writing and foreign language. I have also taught religious education to children grades 2-6 at our church for 3 years. I feel my education combined with years of teaching qualify me to tutor Elementary students (K-6th).
