Hello!

Hiring a tutor for yourself or your child is an investment in the future, and the paybacks of learning or improving skills, especially in writing and reading. Recognizing the need for help is often difficult, but when it is necessary, it is best to start early. Everyone needs help or support in various areas of their lives: academic needs are no different. My goal as a tutor -- as I work for those who hire me -- is not only to work on immediate needs, such as a project or a course, but to also build a foundation of skills that continue to be of benefit beyond individual tutoring sessions.

My URL: https://www.wyzant.com/Tutors/TutoringWithLiz
**My background:**
I have been working as a tutor with Wyzant for four years, have tutored for 200+ hours, and have met and tutoring many wonderful individuals, none of whom had the same needs. Every session is individualized to your learning style and your goals, because we all work and learn differently. I love what I do: helping people of all ages develop the skills and techniques to succeed. I have over two decades of experience working with students as a tutor, a university teaching assistant, a professor, a graduate student (again!) in education, and a substitute teacher in a K-12 setting.

I have a Ph.D. in art history, and although I do tutor students in my field and related areas, I primarily work with those needing extra help in writing (proofreading, grammar, punctuation, editing), as well as reading. I have tutored students from Kindergarten through graduate school for assignments, general coursework, or extra support outside the classroom, professionals needing help with resumes, cover letters, or other projects, native speakers of English, those who are ESL/ELL, those without learning disabilities, and those with "differently abled" brains.

**Do you have "The Fear of the Blank Page?"**
Writing has many purposes -- to communicate a complex idea or thought, to argue a particular point of view, or to provide the reader with important information -- and each has a different style and emphasis. It is a process as well as a skill: the more you do it, the better you get! However, it can often be difficult to know where to start, how to organize what you have when you do get started, and feel confident that your are submitting work that is the best it can possibly be, as it has been carefully proofread and edited.

**Are you a non-native English speaker?**
A large portions of students I work with are non-native speakers of English (ESL/ELL./ENL -- the acronym is always changing). I have years of experience, from when I first started graduate school, working with students from various linguistic backgrounds, in addition to graduate coursework in teaching non-navitve English speakers. I have also studied French, German, and Japanese, and I appreciate the challenges in trying to communicate exactly what you mean to say in a language that is not the "default language" for your brain.

English is a challenging language, writing in "academic" English is very different from the spoken language, and, often, what is grammatically correct is not how a native speaker would communicate the idea. I can help you with the writing process, provide you with various resources, and help with editing, so that you learn what "sounds correct" to English-speaking audiences.

**Do you have a learning disability?**
I have ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), so I know firsthand what it is like to live with a "differently abled" brain in a world that often does not often understand or appreciate differences. I am working on my thesis, which looks at both special and gifted education, for my second master's degree. I approach gifted and special education as a scholar, an educator, a parent, and someone with a disability, so I am familiar with "best practices" and the myriad of resources available for those with various learning disabilities.

**Are you applying for college, graduate school, or a scholarship?**
Having been on admission and scholarship committees and at several universities, both for undergraduate and graduate students, one of my strengths is knowing not only how to create an effective admissions portfolio, but also how to create an application that will distinguish you from the thousands received by colleges and universities every year.

If you have any questions, or would like to schedule a session, please contact me and let me know how I can help you or your child to be more confident, less "stressed out," and more successful. I am here to help!

I tutor both on-line and in-person, although I greatly prefer working with individuals in-person and feel that is how I am most effective as a tutor.

My rate is $35/hour, there is no additional charge for travel, and my rate is negotiable if booking more than four (4) sessions in advance.

Impressive Learning Experience

I know using "the best" will be too exaggerated sometimes, but she is definitely the best tutor I have ever met! I would like to recommend her to students who are looking for a patient and enthusiastic tutor.

Very nice tutor

Elizabeth is so nice and patient. My husband learn little english before. The most problem is that he can not open his mouth and speak loudly and clearly. Elizabeth just encourage him again and again. This is very important for beginners to become more confident. Thank you very much!

Extremely knowledgeable. Outstanding tutor.

Elizabeth has ability to convey her knowledge that is uncomplicated and precise. She recognized my strengths and showed me the areas that need improvement. Elizabeth is an excellent and skillful tutor which has been tremendous help to me.

Marie, 4 lessons with Elizabeth

Very intelligent and smart, as well as friendly and understanding.

She helped me with the college application, specifically the essay supplements. She is so great and helpful. Since I am an international student and English is not my native language, I found her very helpful and smart. She understands what I want to say. She is also so nice to talk to and very very friendly. She is the best, I really like her.
