Hello to you and welcome. I have always enjoyed teaching and seeing the 'light go on'. The happiness of your understanding brings me a lot of satisfaction and will make you feel good about yourself. You will finally have overcome the 'I do not like math' that started your school term. Math is something you will use for the rest of your life. My hope is that you will begin to enjoy working with numbers and be excited to share your new found knowledge with friends and classmates.
I have been out of the classroom for many years. I taught in Puerto Rice at the high school level for many years. I worked with the middle school students helping them to learn the basics of multiplication and division. I gave memory guides to solving problems and remembering basic formulas. I worked with the high school students preparing them for the SATs. I wrote a curriculum for the seniors going from the basis addition, subtraction, multiplication to fractions and decimals. From there we reviewed verbal problems and key words, algebra and geometry to trigonometry.
I began helping a young elementary student with math last year. I noticed with dismay that the basics, multiplication to be specific, were not stressed and began stressing this with my student. My new student was having a very hard time passing any of the class work, home work and tests in his math class. At that juncture I realized how much I enjoyed teaching and working with youngsters watching the 'light go on'. I have time available and would like to help you improve your grade in math. I will definitely drill you in multiplication. I decided to get back into education by tutoring, bringing some basics back to the learning process. I am pleased to say at this point in time, my student is achieving grades of 80s and 90s on his work. I hope that I can help you achieve the same goals by the time summer vacation comes along. As an aside, I am confident you will have a better attitude working with numbers when we complete our time together.
I do appreciate assistance from the parents in working and drilling on the multiplication tables. Most of us learned by rote and is easy enough to do at home and can really help your child. I like to trigger laughter and tie in the relationship of what the child is learning to something they are familiar with in their daily life. It is very hard to teach a concept if it cannot be related to something they understand. I do keep the parents informed on progress and will freely asked for their assistance if necessary.
I received my degree from a small college in Virginia after graduating from high school in New York. I then went to Puerto Rico, studying at the University of Puerto Rico, not for math but Spanish as getting my teaching certificate there required a second language; I did study German and Latin but that was not needed in Puerto Rico. I worked at a private English speaking school and did tutoring after school for those who needed extra help. I returned to the mainland and decided not to get back into the classroom due to the changes in the way teachers were expected to work in the classroom. I did not feel I could conform to the structure of teaching to a test. I wanted my students to learn to think and reason. Hello to you and welcome. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Having passed the math test at 100%, I am qualified to tutor in this area. I tutored a student who was failing in math last school year and is now passing in the next grade. I know the vocabulary and number relationship in basic arithmetic and can make learning this subject fun for your child.
I have tutored students with difficulties in this math area and are now more confident going into the next grade. I am able to work on the vocabulary and number relationships, symbols and able to explain the concepts of finding the values in problems. I will take time to review previous areas where there are questions or uncertainty. I can make the learning process fun rather than drudgery.
