I have taught a diverse population of students, grades six through twelve, for the last 26 years. Most of my career was spent in an inner city Middle school in the Bronx where I worked with Honors students, remedial students, and special needs students. I am familiar with the Wilson Phonics program as well as SAT prep and creative writing. Most importantly, I really enjoy working with students. I retired from my Middle School job on July 1st, 2011. The students had nothing to do with my retirement--rather, it was the adults that got on my nerves! Many of my students have told me that I am like a kid in an older lady's body. I consider that a compliment! I believe that true, lasting learning goes hand in hand with humor! I have taught a diverse population of students, grades six through twelve, for the last 26 years. Irene has been tutoring our son in reading and writing. Our son has some learning issues associated with Asperger's Syndrome and is home-schooled. He is currently at the middle-school level. We asked Irene to see our son regularly to address the reading/writing component of his education. We have been very pleased with Irene's services. Irene is very competent and professional. Her lessons are organized and carefully tailored to our son's needs. She carefully selects reading assignments, works through reading comprehension exercises with him, and has been helping our son develop his writing skills with step-by-step writing lessons. Irene has also been very patient and caring toward our son during each lesson. We have already seen our son's progress. Moreover, he has told us that he enjoys each lesson with Irene, and seems to be more motivated to do his reading/writing assignments.
Irene helped my son with a writing assignment that he was reluctant to complete. She helped him to break the task down into one part at a time helping him to feel less overwhelmed. He said It was the most productive time he spent writing and it was fun!
Irene has been a real lifesaver. My son is a difficult student to deal with and she has been the soul of patience and kindness. Having Irene come twice a week has radically lowered the stress level in our home and we are beginning to see real progress in terms of work/time issues.
My daughter needed help primarily in vocabulary and like any 17 year old, I expected her to be a bit picky with her tutor, but she very much liked Irene who is prompt, courteous and truly has exceeded my expectations.
I would recommend Irene as a tutor for any of my friends and neighbors children!
Mrs. V. has helped our son a lot with improving his writing skills. She provides helpful experience to instruct and teach valuable writing skills. We're very pleased with her.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
