About Faye

I'm a recent Ph.D. in ecology with 6 years experience teaching (lectures and lab) at the college level, and I want to help YOU love life science!

My goal when teaching biology is to make diverse topics both accessible and interesting. As an ecologist, big-picture thinking patterns come naturally to me. I encourage my students to think about not only the details of a particular system but also how those systems connect, repeated themes in biological mechanisms, and the evolutionary context in which these systems developed.

I am an experienced research biologist, and if you are looking to develop a scientific research project I would be delighted to help you develop a research plan. I can help you with project design, statistical analysis, and even teach you how to use R, my preferred stats programming language.

I'm also a self-taught cook with 10+ years experience preparing an eclectic mix of vegetarian and vegan dishes from around the world. My scientific training gives me great insight into how to modify and improve recipes as I go; I love to experiment and to use my understanding of biology and chemistry to improve my cooking. (After all, cooking is mostly just applied chemistry!)

Please drop me a line to arrange a meeting! I'm also available for online tutoring. My base rate is $90/hr for in-person tutoring and $75/hr for online.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I have a Ph.D. in ecology (Rutgers) with 6 years teaching college level biology. And I have a Sc.B. in neuroscience (Brown).

Cooking

I am a self-taught home cook with 10+ years experience in the kitchen. I started cooking for myself when I became a vegetarian at 20, and my mom said "I don't know what to make for your dinner any more!" I cook an eclectic mix of vegetarian and vegan dishes from around the world. Further, my background as a scientist gives me great insight into how to modify and improve recipes as I go; I love to experiment and to use my understanding of biology and chemistry to improve my cooking. (After all, cooking is mostly just applied chemistry!) Sample menus and dishes: hummus, tabouli and fresh-baked pita bread; baked tofu, marinara sauce, polenta and broccoli rabe; baked pasta with eggplant and peppers; chopped southwest salad; lemony lentil salad with crispy shallots.

Zoology

I have studied numerous animal groups in detail. As an undergraduate, I completed coursework in vertebrate evolution and diversity as well as comparative anatomy of vertebrates. As an undergrad and a graduate student I completed coursework on bird life and behavior. As a graduate student I have taken several classes on insect physiology, behavior and ecology. As a teaching assistant in General Biology, I have taught several labs on animal diversity. Finally, my Ph.D. work focused on pollination ecology which includes in-depth understanding of insect life and behavior, especially bees.
