About George

I am an experienced instructor and tutor with a background in the following areas: Portuguese, Spanish, English, writing, public speaking, the social sciences, and the humanities. I just graduated from UPenn, where I was a member of Phi Beta Kappa (top 8% of the graduating class) and also took graduate courses, studying literatures, languages, and political science. There, I worked as a public speaking instructor, giving workshops to diverse groups, and as an individual tutor in ESL. The government of the United States has recognized my passion for instruction through awarding me a Fulbright fellowship to go teach in Portugal in the future.

I am originally from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, have lived in Argentina and Brazil, and have traveled in Portuguese-speaking Africa. Hence, I have first-hand exposure to the Spanish dialects spoken in the Caribbean, in Argentina/Uruguay, and elsewhere. My studies have given me a strong grounding in the literature and grammar of the Spanish, Portuguese, and English languages, as well as European thought and the social sciences.

As a writer, I have worked for finance companies including Morgan Stanley and Bloomberg, which requires the highest levels of precision and speed. Performing at high levels in the fields that I teach requires not just vocabulary and fluency, but also confidence, which is ultimately what I build.

I take great pleasure in giving students the tools speak, write, and read with the confidence and competence that will get them where they want to be.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Portuguese

Currently writing a thesis for an MA in law at the Universidade do Minho in Braga, Portugal, where all my work is in Portuguese.

SAT Writing

I received a near-perfect score on the SAT writing and verbal sections, using drills that I am turning to again as I prep for my GRE. I also regularly teach writing.
