About Joe

Current residing in Edgewater, NJ, just outside of Manhattan, and am able to service Northern New Jersey, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and Westchester.

Very experienced professor of college writing seeking new clients. I've taught writing and reading to all age ranges, from elementary to graduate students (prior to working at the college level, I taught 7-12 ELA in NY and NJ). Although I specialize in all manners of college writing (all subjects that require written work), especially the craft of the college admissions essay, I'm also experienced in SAT and ACT reading and writing, work regularly with ESL learners, perform freelance work as a copy editor and proofreader, and can assist with just about any other reading, writing, comprehension, or college advancement needs. I'm also highly experienced in high education administration, so I can be of assistance with a variety of college admissions needs beyond admissions essay writing. My current clients are both at the college and high school level.

Furthermore, if there's a specific project that you need help with, such as public speaking, presentations, interviews, cover letters, etc., please reach out--I am confident in my ability to design sessions that will help you achieve your goals or transcend any hurtles that are obstructing your success. My rates are also adjustable based on the particular project, so the rate listed here is just a ballpark figure.

In terms of credentials, I hold a BA in Literature and Writing from a top liberal arts college, as well as a MA in Teaching Literature and Writing (state certified), and a MFA in Writing. I've been nominated for a Pushcart writing prize and was featured as a notable in the Best American Essays of 2012. I taught writing at a major NYC university for nearly a decade and am now an academic program director and professor at a small, competitive liberal arts college.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
