About Dan

I've been tutoring and training Photoshop and Photoshop Elements for five years, and teach both programs at Access Institute in Queens. My focus has been teaching photo/image editing to beginning-Intermediate students.

I’ve also started online sessions. Students and I work together in real-time on the same images as I guide them step by step, keystroke by keystroke.

I created a library of photos which I use to demonstrate specific step-by-step procedures/skills. Then I guide the the student to do the procedure on the same photo. Then we work with his/her own photo using the same techniques to reinforce the skills/procedures.

I’ve found that working on your own photos, right from the start, is a very effective way to learn Photoshop. Before our first lesson, email me a photo(s) you’d like to start working on and improve.

Let me show you how to quickly improve and organize your photos—including cellphone snapshots—with Photoshop or Photoshop Elements*. No photo-editing experience necessary! Learn comfortably at your own pace to quickly develop the skills and know-how you want.

(*Photoshop Elements offers most of Photoshop’s incredible power, uses may of the same tools and procedures, and it’s much, much easier to use and quicker to learn. Check out the reviews online)

Depending on the student’s knowledge and needs, typical procedures/skills covered include cropping, resizing, improving lighting, correcting colors, retouching, sharpening, combining photos for landscapes, composites, creating an online photo gallery and sharing photos online.

I'll also show you how to use the must-know photo organizing tools accompanying Photoshop and Photoshop Elements: They're indispensable for organizing, labeling and quickly finding your photos in a flash.

I’ve taught many one-to-one lessons, ran Photoshop classes and seminars at the NY Science and Business Library, NYACC (New York Amateur Computer Club at NYU) and at the RIVAA Gallery, among others.

I’m an avid “Street-Photographer”… photos exhibited at the RIVVA gallery, Lambertville Library Gallery and in magazines, like Time Out NY, and on my photo-web site.

I co-founded a Manhattan-based IT vocational school where I was school director and taught computer courses

As both a student and teacher, I’ve found that an effective way to teach and learn Photoshop is to conceptually divide it into four components:
1)Adjustments, for example:lighting: dodging & burning, brightness/contrast, levels, exposure, etc. color: saturation/hue, vibrance, balance, b&w, etc.
2) Selections/selection tools, for example:
-Quick selection, magic wand, eliptical/rectangle tools, etc.
3)Layers & Masks
4)Organizing photos

I really love teaching and look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
