About Jan

I tutor the two most important subjects in the world: Biology and Writing
Quite a statement!

And, I tutor geometry.

BIOLOGY is the essence of life. I explore biological life; your life; so it's relevant to your every living moment, whether you are awake or asleep. Biology is as fascinating on the microscopic level as the universe is fascinating on the grand scale. My many years as a doctor have given me a perspective that brightens the subject in dimensions few know exist.

I show you the big picture and once you understand that, then it's very easy to go smaller and smaller until you've gotten to the cellular level, then, we go inside the cell and see how that works.

I capture that wonder and expose you to it.

The way I teach WRITING is quite different and your background, level of education or life's experiences do not matter. You will be taught how to think like a writer (and beyond) and that education will spill over into your school, business and enjoyment. You will retain that knowledge and use it for the rest of your life.

A session with a personal tutor is not at all like sitting in a class of 20-30 students (or more!) with one teacher. It’s obvious that the teacher is torn between what must be accomplished as per the lesson plan and the needs of the students who struggle to master the material thrown at them – and the material is thrown at them because there is not enough time to spoon feed.

For the lone teacher in a sea of students, there is no time to focus on a particular student’s needs and there are often a large percentage of students who need that special attention to clear up concepts that may be murky in their minds; ideas on the topics being discussed that don’t seem to make sense or fit in; or innuendos that just skip past the student and are not repeated because of the volume of material that must be covered.

The personal tutor can overcome those deficiencies and discuss single concepts from different points of view so the student gets a richer and more dimensional understanding of the subject. Such internalization that occurs from the repeat and varied explanations of a single idea allow for those elements of education to settle in the student’s mind and remain there forever as opposed to flitting in and out . . . and gone forever.

An extraordinary value of having a good personal tutor is the latitude of the tutor to digress and cover tangential material the student should know but doesn’t – doesn’t because (s)he has not yet been exposed to those facts and ideas; again due to the lack of time to do so – or the lack of ability and/or concern by the classroom teacher. That additional and special attention is one of the positive aspects of tutoring that is contained in my efforts.

The hurried environment of a classroom forbids a teacher from helping the student over the humps and obstacles all students face sooner or later. It is the personal tutor who spots those difficulties, zeroes in on those problem areas and removes the barriers to learning.

In a relatively short time period, a good personal tutor can change the way the student thinks and so elevate the student in all subjects.

Although I also touch on sentence structure, grammar and other aspects of writing, these are not sessions to transform you into an English purist, novelist or playwright. Our sessions will give you the ability to write powerfully or playfully or in a communicative style that will enhance your position as a student or employee or employer.

You'll have fun bringing out the writer in you and then figuring out what to do with your new ability and using it; as you will do often.

I teach writing so you can get past that 1-page essay assignment or finish your thesis.

I instill passion for the subject in my students so the subject matter comes alive and the words "boring" and "droll" never enter the room.

When I tutor, I teach those things one must know to demonstrate command of a subject. If you know those things, you can easily achieve a grade of 75%. If you have a little intelligence and stop to think, you can easily raise that to 80-82%. Higher than that is merely a reflection of how hard you work implementing the knowledge and how much of an effort you put into learning.

And whatever I teach you stays with you as you grow, mature and venture into the lands of further education, employment and enjoyment. My instruction is intellectually challenging but not demanding; stimulating but not overbearing; interesting and noteworthy. You will tell your friends.

I also tutor Plane Geometry. It was my best subject (98% on the Regents Exam),

Having an understanding of the relationships between angles and shapes and area and perimeter gives the world a more reasonable basis; not so confusing. It's information you will use time and again in life.

And with such an understanding comes a stronger self-esteem, more confidence and a readiness not otherwise attained.

It may seem like lines on paper but learning how to translate them to the real world makes the real world not so frightening; more tame; more friendly.

That's how I approach tutoring geometry and it seems to work well because it's more humane and less mechanical.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
