About Nancy

I am a substitute teacher in the Lockport School District. This is my 6th year. It is exciting to be able to share knowledge with children and watch them get excited about learning. My skills and patience enabled both of my gifted children, now successful adults and married, to skip one grade in school and participate in many gifted programs.

As a substitute I work with students of all abilities in grades K-6. I spend a lot of time helping students who need extra help with math, reading and other skills. In addition, I work with special needs children and ESL students.

I substitute in regular classrooms as well as working with children in the learning labs, in small groups or individually, to help them learn math, and improve their reading, comprehension, and reasoning skills. I am familiar with the Common Core curriculum, particularly in math. I work with many children whose first language is not English. Some of these elementary age children are newly arrived in the United States and live in non-English speaking households. School is where they learn to speak, read and write English. I speak only a little Spanish, but am able to help students from ANY BACKGROUND with their English.

In the past I have been a volunteer with the Civil Air Patrol (volunteer auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force) for more than 10 years. Currently I volunteer at the Erie Canal Locks here in Lockport.

My sewing background: The yellow dress I'm wearing in the photo is one that I made. It has a Mandarin collar, piping and an asymmetric shoulder closure with cloth buttons. (The snap at the neck is normally closed.) The matching earrings, piping included, were made using special earring discs that can be covered with most fabrics, similar to making cloth covered buttons using forms. (Cloth buttons can also be done by hand sewing the desired fabric over another button.)

I have been sewing since I was a teenager. I began my own sewing business in high school and have continued sewing for more than 30 years. My experience in sewing includes:

- clothing construction
- alterations
- mending
- interior decorating (curtains, pillows, valences, and more)
- craft type sewing
- monogramming
- embroidery and crewel
- reweaving
- hand sewing and machine sewing, including home serger use

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a degree in Recreation and Parks from Penn State. I have worked with children from preschool through college, plus adults. My experiences with children include directing day camps for grades K-5, and volunteering as a Girl Scout leader after having gone through the entire Scouting program myself. For the last 10+ years I have been involved with Cadets (ages 12-21) in the Civil Air Patrol (the volunteer auxiliary of the US Air Force). I have taught arts and crafts, sailing, canoeing, first aid, mentored kids working on a newspaper, gardening, cooking, and more. I have taken groups of adults and children on owl prowls at night, fern walks during the day, and gave presentations about Maple Syrup production at stations set up to show the process step-by-step. I have also run birthday parties for a local McDonalds while home from college for a semester.

Additional experiences also include work with special needs children, my own son included. In particular, and a favorite, was teaching ice skating for the Special Olympics program and others. I worked for nearly two years at the Adult and Child Rehabilitation Center for McHenry County (Illinois). Although my job there was fund raising and public relations, I spent much time watching, learning, and helping the therapists in occupational, speech and physical therapy. It was rewarding to see the progress made by all clients, especially children.

Currently, I am a substitute for the Lockport City School District. Most of my assignments are with special needs children as an aide or teaching assistant.

Elementary Math

I have been a substitute going on 6 years and have helped many students with math. Most of that in learning centers where students get extra help with math and reading. Math is one of my strongest areas when working with elementary children. (I was an honors math student myself.)

I like to use manipulatives, objects to help students visualize their math problems, when appropriate. This also makes learning more fun.

ESL/ESOL

As a substitute teacher's aide and assistant in the Lockport City School District, I work with many children whose first language is not English. Some of these elementary age children are newly arrived in the United States and live in non-English speaking households. School is where they learn to speak, read and write English. I work with some of these children in the learning labs, in small groups or individually, to help them learn and sometimes catch up to their peers.

Sewing

I have been sewing since I was a teenager. I first learned to sew by hand at summer camp. Machine sewing began in Junior High School. Back then, Home Economics was required for all girls. (I had to take shop classes as a part of a club after school.) I've taken a few specialized sewing classes to learn specific techniques when my machines were new or to learn how to sew on specialty fabrics.

I began my own sewing business in high school and have continued sewing for more than 30 years. Sewing paid for many of my expenses while in college and was for several years, a full-time, tax paying business. During college I did a lot of patching of students' blue jeans, often patching the patches of their favorite pair. Many customers come to me after being displeased with work done by their local dry cleaner. For example, pants hems are usually sewn with a single thread whether they are new from the store or shortened at the dry cleaners. I use two threads in my sewing machine so that a broken thread doesn't simply pull out the entire hem. I do many hems by hand.

I've always guaranteed most of my work.

My experiences in sewing include:

- clothing construction
- alterations, including alterations for special needs clients
- mending
- interior decorating (curtains, pillows, valences, and more)
- craft type sewing
- monogramming
- embroidery and crewel
- reweaving
- hand sewing and machine sewing, including home serger use

I have an extensive photo portfolio of my work.
