About Melanie

I am a Special Education Teacher and have tutored for many years both inside and outside of my home. I have experience in and have taught all subject areas from Pre-K to 8th grade and am a certified Level 1 Multi-Sensory Reading Instructor. I currently tutor a 9th grader in reading strategies. I am permanently certified in NYS Special Education and am a 7th grade ELA & Math teacher.

I am becoming well acquainted with the Common Core and the demands it places on the student and the curriculum. I have a case load of Special Ed students who are in my team taught classes and work daily on helping them with their 4 core subjects, as well as study skills, test prep, and organization of time and resources. I have a Master's degree plus 16 post graduate credits. 10 of those credits are for multi-sensory based reading that originated for dyslexic students but has proven effective with all students who struggle with reading decoding and encoding.

I have taught both Special Education and General Education students for more than 30 years and would love to share some of my tried and true techniques to help your child become a confident learner in the subject area(s) he/she is struggling in. I feel it is paramount to develop and cultivate an atmosphere of trust and respect so optimum learning can take place. References are available on request.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have taught students in my classroom with ADD/ADHD for the past 30 years. They typically have an OHI classification and their IEP's reflect their needs in this area.

Aspergers

Of my 30 year's experience in teaching special education, more than 20 of those have involved having student(s) with Aspergers. They have ranged from preschool age to middle school and each involve their own unique set of challenges. My experience has shown a greater need for social skills than academics as they tend to be gifted or exceptionally bright in certain subject areas. Each student has individual strengths and needs that I address as they arise. I have found no two to be alike and enjoy the challenges they present. I also have taken graduate courses specifically for students in the spectrum.

Autism

As a special education teacher, I have taught many students with Autism and Asperger's. They present a unique challenge in that while they need guidance in their social skills, they tend to be gifted and/or bright in many subject areas. The goal is to find a balance between the 2 and teach to each individual student.

Dyslexia

I am a Level 1 certified multi-sensory reading instructor at the post graduate level. I teach, among other programs, the Wilson Intensive Reading Program which was developed specifically for dyslexic students. I understand the challenges of teaching dyslexic students and work with them to find a method that works best for them.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have more than 20 years of experience teaching levels K-6th grade. While working with the Special Education population, all functioning levels fell between pre-K and 6th grade. Throughout my teaching career, I have tutored students at the elementary level in all subject areas. These include, but are not limited to, reading, writing, math, science, and social studies as well as the necessary study skills for each of these areas. I find hands-on manipulaitves as well as other kinesthetic, auditory, and visual teaching styles work best after assessing the students' needs and learning styles.

Handwriting

I have taught fine motor skills for many years. When teaching pre-school, there were many pre-requisite steps to learning to write. At an older age, there are tips and techniques I've utilized over the years to make handwriting more legible, stay on the lines, and other skills as well.

Hard Of Hearing

I have teaching experience with students who are either hard of hearing or deaf. I have taught students with a phonic ear in the past and students who just need amplification at their desk. Although I am rusty, I have used sign language for many years and have the text books to brush up on it if needed. Otherwise, I am consciously aware of facing the student and forming words articulately so that they may read lips if necessary.

Phonics

I have taught all levels of phonics and have post-graduate credits in multi-sensory reading that involves breaking down phonics into manageable chunks. My experience in teaching phonics ranges from basics at the pre-school level to breaking down suffixes and prefixes and adding to past knowledge of phonics skills to decode higher level words. I have utilized many activities and curricula to teach phonics.

Special Needs

I began teaching special education since 1980 and have either taught in a classroom or tutored throughout this time. I have experience with a wide range of abilities and disabilities and have taught severe /profound, moderate, pre-school, multi-handicapped, and currently Learning Disabled, SI, and OHI. I am well versed in writing and implementing IEP's.

Study Skills

As a teacher of middle school special education and general education students, study skills are always a priority to teach, reinforce, and maintain. Organization, various study habits, and varied techniques are utilized to organize their time and materials. Additionally, techniques to help remember facts and information are taught and reinforced throughout the school setting.
