About Christie

I am a graduate of the College of Saint Rose in Albany, NY. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Interdepartmental Studies (Education and Psychology). During this degree, I compiled a series of interview questions for Elementary Education educators. Equally important, I learned classroom management strategies during this project and employed behavioral strategies to achieve an organized classroom environment.

I have done substitute teaching for several years and am experienced in Elementary Education subjects that include mathematics, science, grammar, writing and handwriting, spelling, reading, and test preparation. In addition, I have taught in several educational environments. These include special education and small group learning environments. For example, during college I did Observation Participation Teaching (O.P.T.) for 90 hours in second grade, fifth grade, and special education classroom environments. During the O.P.T. experience, I tutored grammar lessons, mathematics, science, spelling, handwriting, and composition lessons. I have a lot of patience and knowledge of the English language. In addition, I am qualified to tutor the Elementary Education K-6 academic levels.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Handwriting

During the college teaching program of Observational Participation Teaching (O.P.T.), I worked with the student one-on-one to complete several handwriting activities. We composed cursive writing of individual letters on white lined paper. For example, I modeled how to write the letter "A" in cursive writing during a handwriting lesson. The learner had to complete this task on his or her paper.
During the Teaching Methods for English Language Arts and Social Studies course, I would personally show the pupil how to write in cursive on the blackboard and then on white lined paper. Then, he or she would model and attempt to replicate this. This repetitive handwriting lesson would continue until the student became comfortable with the handwriting task.
During the student teaching coursework, I taught a second grade and a fourth grade classroom. In the second grade classroom, I worked on an individual level with a student about Handwriting. For example, I modeled how to write the learner's name in cursive writing. Then, the student wrote his or her name using the handwriting skills that were taught to them.
In the fourth grade classroom, I worked with a special-needs learner. They had to write the letter "I" for Igloo since it was the winter time. On this tutoring experience, the student pronounced the word "Igloo" before writing the letter "I" in cursive handwriting.
At the special needs center that I worked at, the learner had to pronounce and write their name.
In a similar manner, when I worked at a preschool learning environment, the student had to write his or her name during a handwriting lesson and draw a picture.
On another tutoring experience, I worked one-on-one with a learner during the Reading Theory and Practice course at college. At this time, the student was asked to read a paragraph from a book and then write a sentence in cursive handwriting of the main idea from the paragraph that they read.

Reading

During the Reading Theory and Practice college course, I learned a developmental reading program for grades Pre-K-6. In addition, I studied recent thought and research, comprehensive, holistic approaches, and investigation-analysis teaching. In addition, I learned several models of the reading process, methods of teaching reading, and components of useful reading instruction. During this college course, I worked one-on-one with a student during a reading activity. The learner read and sounded out words from a story. This activity assisted them with improving his or her reading skills.

In addition, I completed a college course named Literature for Children in Elementary School. This course focuses on the theory and practice related to the reading ability of children in literature-based, practical, and comprehensive reading texts. Also, I became knowledgeable of the positive characteristics of literature in various categories. Then, I read and graded this literature and developed methods for its use as an important part of the academic curriculum. In addition, I learned how to encourage students to read, share, understand, and enjoy literature. Thank you.

Best,
Christie
