I have taught English since 2002 and headed our high school's English program at an international prep school near Washington, D.C. I am dedicated to my students' success. I am certified in NYS to teach ELA in grades 7-12. I graduated magna cum luade with a B.A. in English, and received my Masters of Science in Education degree with honors and distinction.
I have a background in special education, and am a member of several honor societies. I began tutoring in graduate school at my college's Writing Center, where I provided individual and small group tutoring for undergraduate and graduate students to promote improved reading and writing skills. I received training for and ran a summer writing camp for students in grades 7-12 implementing the Excellence In Writing Program. What a delight to see students who were previously filled with writer's dread leave my classroom with confidence and skill!
Over the course of my professional career, I have taught AP Literature and Composition, AP Language and Composition, AP Art History, World, American, British and European Literatures, designing both unit and daily lesson plans tailored to meet the varying needs of a highly diverse student body. I have designed curriculum and instruction for students to help them meet the changing needs within their educational environments. I have also administered and scored standardized and informal testing to evaluate individual student academic and behavioral needs. I have provided individualized tutorial services to improve academic achievement and build self-efficacy in students who require additional supports outside the classroom environment. I have communicated frequently and worked closely with parents and other educators to assist them in reinforcing new learning strategies at home for their children, in addition to providing feedback during students’ IEP meetings to reinforce learning strategies both within and outside the classroom. I am well organized, prepared and ready to teach.
My passion is teaching. There is no greater reward than to see struggling students acquire new knowledge and skills, and build their self-confidence. My aim is not only to improve students' academic grades, but to ensure that they understand concepts, content, and structure and are able to carry what they learn forward into future successes. It was a first meeting to assess what he would like to work on and for her to assess what he might need help with. I think it went very well. We will give her a try.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Throughout my graduate studies I planned on receiving NYS certification in special education. As a result, I took close to three years of graduate level courses in special ed. I received high honors in all my classes. After having substitute taught mainly in special ed classrooms, I determined that this area of employment was not exclusively for me, for personal reasons. The stellar education coupled with experience in this area, however, has sharpened not only my knowledge and understanding of how best to work with students with disabilities, but how best to set measurable goals and design lesson plans, develop FBAs and BIPS, and also perform an IEP.
I studied about the nature of autism and how best to design academic and behavioral plans for students on the spectrum at The College of Saint Rose under Dr. Susan DeLuke, one of the leading experts in Autism in our country. In that course I successfully performed 20 advanced field placement hours at the Anderson School, an all inclusive educational setting for students within the spectrum. I team taught with a fellow grad student a small social skills group for students (grades 7-12) within the college's Emery Clinic. I privately tutored a high school senior who was on the spectrum and worked closely with her teachers and guardian on how to set manageable goals during the year as well as after she graduated.
I received a masters of education in Curriculum and Instruction in May, 2014 from The College of Saint Rose. For two years of graduate school, I was required to complete graduate level coursework --including lesson plans--specifically with the Common Core Standards and NYS Standards as our standards.

I designed and taught innovative, hands-on curriculum and instruction in ELL Reading, Grammar, Writing and Speech. I supervised, trained, coached, and evaluated all new incoming ELL teachers. I worked closely with administration, parents, and other educators to improve student academic achievement that met the individual needs of each student. I provided mentoring and individual after-school tutoring using individual and cooperative learning research-based methods. I directed and provided evidence based instruction for the middle and high school’s summer writing program. I currently home tutor through two different school districts an fill in as a substitute teacher at one.
I taught phonics based reading to international students (mainly from Asian countries) who possessed varying levels of English language ability for close to 10 years. I designed lesson plans, taught ESL grammar, speech and reading. My students all went on to successful completing of my classes.
