Emerson College / Mass Art (Photography, Graphic)
SUNY New Paltz (Enrolled)
I am currently a part-time Instructor of Art and Design at SUNY Ulster, where I have been teaching and working for seven years. I have taught the following courses: Intro to Design Foundations, Graphic Design I, Intro to Web Design, Intro to Two-Dimensional Design (for both fine art and design majors), Intro to Three-Dimensional Design (for both fine art and design majors), Intro to Visual Art (online art appreciation and fundamentals). I also teach adults in SUNY's Continuing Education Program and have had a private consulting an tutoring business for ten years.
In my own professional life, I have worked both as an Art Director, and high-end photographic retouching and know Photoshop inside and out. I have worked in web development, both as a consultant and a team in the ever-changing world of online commerce and information. I have experienced a varied and rich career and enjoy sharing and imparting any information I can to help people, whether it is helping a career get off the ground, or helping someone with a project.
My tutoring methods are geared to the individual. Since some students rather watch and take notes, others work better hands on, I've developed a successful method: We will sitting work side-by-side, and I'll have my own computer next to theirs. I will demonstrate a technique and explain what I'm doing, then go over the process slower, and with more depth and precision while the student follows along on their computer. I will then go over quickly what we've done and have them do it on their own. I was helped a great deal by Dina and would like to continue to work with her until I fully understand the program and how to use it correctly.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I teach InDesign at a university, both in the matriculated Graphic Design program and the Continuing Education program.
I have used InDesign in nearly every capacity, from creating interactive PDFs, to printed books as well as the usual business card collateral and promotional posters. I've successfully sent work to press and instructed others to complete projects.
I have been taught traditional darkroom photography as well as digital photography. I have been a master printer and darkroom technician and understand what constitutes a good photograph and how to make it.
I have adapted these skills into digital photography, and am an expert Photoshop retoucher.
In addition to my technological skills, I have been educated in art and composition, and understand the aesthetics as well.
