I hold certification in both Special and General Education. My licence is in Special Education (grades 1-6), being that I have been teaching Students with Disabilities for 8 years now. I teach in Queens at an elementary school. I have taught children between the ages of 6-10. I enjoy teaching and helping children to learn and grow to their fullest potential.
I tutored for about 2 years and find it very rewarding. I find that nothing beats one to one, direct attention. I love to witness that light bulb moment when a student finally gets something he or she has been struggling with or even when they feel good that they are finally getting something they had difficulty with. My experience with special needs children has allowed me to differentiate my instruction and tailor each lesson to meet the needs of each individual child.
I am very strong with literacy and grammar. I am a firm believer in consulting the dictionary when I don't know a word, the exact meaning of it, or how to spell it. I am the one people go to when they need something read to be corrected for grammatical errors. If I don't know something, in addition to using the dictionary, I tend to look things up on Google.
I am very good at helping students with phonics in order to become better readers. I reinforce letter sounds and help them to put those sounds together to make words. I find repetition is key.
I am an excellent speller. I won the school spelling bee when I was in the 6th grade and won 2nd place in the district. If I feel that I am unsure of the correct spelling of a word, I always consult the dictionary and instruct students to do so as well.
I am willing to tutor children of all ages, especially in the literacy area. I can tutor math as well. I can also provide students with useful tips on how to succeed on the state exams. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
