About Suzanne

Hi there! My name is Suzanne M. I am a 25 year old recent graduate from CUNY Hunter College where I studied environmental earth science, geology and archaeology. My current qualifications of the earth sciences include a specialty in the geological sciences and earth system concepts. Though I specialize in physical geology, I also have working knowledge of climatology and oceanography. For a while, I was employed with the National Parks Service where I have worked in environmental sustainability, habitat restoration and community leadership. After traveling throughout the U.S. National Parks system I have also collected extensive photographs of many geological formations from all over the country and I use them as visual guides for students to see working geology in its natural environment.

I grew up in San Francisco, California where I was enrolled in a Chinese Immersion Program since kindergarten. Thus, I am fluent in Cantonese Chinese and I speak some Mandarin as well. Though I am of Arab descent, the only working Arabic I knew until recently was a little bit of the Palestinian dialect but have since studied extensively Modern Standard and Egyptian Arabic at Hunter.

Throughout my studies at Hunter, I also had the chance to study abroad in Jordan, England, Greece and Egypt so I feel fortunate to have met with people from all over the world.

It would be my pleasure to tutor anyone in the earth sciences, Chinese language and Arabic language. Likewise, I am qualified to tutor in various math and English levels, as well as K-12 science concepts such as chemistry, physics and astronomy.

I like to make the learning experience engaging and fun, with creative approaches to remembering vocabulary or difficult concepts. My love for all my subjects (and more!) excites me to pass on my knowledge to anyone who is interested in learning them, or is having trouble making sense of all the information. There is no one method to learning science or a foreign language, and I understand how tough the process can be (I've been there.) So I'm not critical and I truly want to work with you! =]

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I studied the Arabic language for four years at Hunter College, focusing on Modern Standard and the Egyptian dialect in order to supplement my familial understanding of the Palestinian/Jordanian dialects. For two of those four years I have also aided in tutoring Arabic to students in the beginning and intermediate classes with everything from reading and writing to speaking and listening comprehension.

I am an archaeology minor at CUNY Hunter College where I have studies anthropological and classical archaeology extensively. Likewise, I have experience working in the college zooarchaeology lab located on campus.

I've taken a course a Hunter College on astronomy which included a lab portion. Because many concepts of astronomy are related to physics, I found that many processes are understandable from an Earth science perspective. I am therefore knowledgeable of the life cycle of stars, formation of planets, moon phases, and earth's position in the solar system and the universe.

I am a native Chinese speaker of the Cantonese dialect after attending primary and secondary school in Guangzhou, China, as well as in a San Francisco based public immersion program. Thus, I am fluent in reading, writing and speaking. I also have knowledge of the Mandarin dialect through my university's Chinese Flagship Program of which I was a member for a semester.

My major field of study is in the environmental Earth sciences which is a branch of the geography department at Hunter College. I am knowledgeable of various aspects of geography, ranging from cultural geography to physical geography, including land forms, physical processes, demography (ethnicity, age, language etc.), and people-planet relationships. Also related, I've memorized the locations, flags and capitals of every country in the world, and I am well versed in international relations.

I completed my bachelor's degree in environmental Earth science with a concentration in geology in 2015. My specialties are in geomorphology and plate tectonics, and I have experience with petrology and environmental hazards.

Physical Science

Because I am an Earth science major, I have many experiences working within the physical sciences, including astronomy.
