I have been teaching piano lessons for thirty years. My students have ranged in age from the earliest age 5 until adults aged thirty and up. I cover many areas of music in my lessons. I give students a strong foundation in music theory, technique and composition. My students are encouraged to improvise even in early stages of study.
The styles of music studied can vary according to the students' musical interest. I use John Thompson and Edna-Mae Burnam's "A Dozen a Day" as a guides in beginning to play and then introduce more contemporary material. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
