About Nick

Hello,

First let me tell you a little bit about myself. I was going to join the military after high school, incited by my witness of the terrible events of 9/11 and willingness to support my country in Afghanistan. I received a 93 on my ASVAB examination and was set to go into the USAR as a 97B Military Counterintelligence agent. After we invaded Iraq I changed my mind. I simply could not place myself into service to fight in a war I did not agree with. I started taking part time classes while working full time as a produce manager. I moved, left my job and decided to go to school full time for computer science. I plan to transfer next year to SUNYIT to complete a BS degree in Computer and Network Security and a MS in Telecommunications.

I am most proficient in mathematics, especially in Algebra. I know several programming languages, including Java and VB .NET. I have an excellent knowledge of grammar that includes both morphology and syntax as well as a broad vocabulary. I have knowledge of mechanics and electronics. I am an A+ certified PC technician with over 6 years of experience. I have studied within the Cisco Networking Academy and have a working knowledge of the OSI model, proper network design, sub-net addressing, transmission mediums and IEEE standards.

I would love to work with you to help you accomplish your goals and dreams, even as I have had help accomplishing mine. No matter what happens in life, always remember to never give up and to never stay down.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Computer Programming

As a computer science major, I have studied multiple programming languages. More importantly, I have studied programming logic and design strategies that are much more broad in scope.

Without regard to individual language syntax, I have a firm grasp of core concepts of programming: data types, standard operators including logical AND/OR and bitwise AND/OR; if, else, and else-if statements; nesting, switch statements, scope, proper use of constants; pretest, post-test and counting loops; OOP class concepts including fields, methods, and constructors; interpretation and translation of decimal, binary, and hexadecimal values; ASCII and Unicode values including the use of escape characters, use of naming conventions; functions, arguments, and passing data by reference or by value, and more.

I have knowledge of many design tools and strategies: flowchart design, pseudocode, hierarchy charts, debugging strategies such as hand tracing, as well as both general knowledge of IDEs and specific knowledge for various popular IDEs and editors(MS Visual Studio 2010 and 2012, Netbeans, Eclipse, LuaEdit, Notepad++, Dev-C++).

Computer Science

Being A+ certified in computer science, I also have an in-depth knowledge of computer hardware.

I have taken courses in electronics and have studied integrated circuits and digital signals, basic electrical components and their purposes(such as resistors, capacitors, transistors, diodes, inductors, transducers, etc.), Ohm's Law, Watt's Law, Coulomb's Law, Faraday's Law, Oersted's Law, Kirchhoff's Law, Ampere's Law, and Maxwell's Equations. I have studied both DC and AC current including the use of oscilloscopes, waveform generators, phase, frequency, and impedance.

Microsoft Windows

Besides being a computer science major, I am a CompTIA A+ certified technician. In-depth knowledge of the Windows operating system is the primary focus of the software portion of the exam. Beyond the average navigation and operations in the Windows OS, I know how to manually allocate system resources, configure security settings, configure internet settings, and modify the Windows Registry. I have been a practicing freelance technician for the last 7 years.

Visual Basic

I am a computer science major in college. I have taken VB .NET as a required course. I can provide you with example programs written by me as coursework if desired. I can also provide you with a custom application of your own choosing if you desire.
