About Joseph

My name is Joseph, but I usually go by Joe. I am currently a freshman enrolled at Johns Hopkins University double majoring in Biology and Spanish. During high school, I was the president of a student run tutoring program called TEACH. In addition to this administrative role, I also tutored numerous students in Spanish over the course of two years. No matter how my week was going, I could always look forward to tutoring other students. Helping students to master concepts that they previously struggled with was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I also volunteered as a tutor at a Brooklyn public library for a year. During that time, I helped students from grades 1-12 with any questions that they had about their homework. Right now, I tutor third graders once a week through a program at Johns Hopkins, and I tutor a student in Spanish through my school. If it isn't already obvious, I really love tutoring students, especially in Spanish. I typically revolve my tutoring sessions around the questions that students have, and whenever they think that they have a solid understanding of a concept, I give them a quick quiz to make sure that everything makes sense. Depending on the student, I can adjust teaching style, by making set teaching plans, altering the way I explain concepts, or utilizing various online resources such as Conjuguemos.

My story about studying Spanish is a rather long one, beginning all the way back in 6th grade. During this time, I struggled to find confidence in any part of the language. Although I improved over the next couple of years, I always felt like I was a step behind all of my other classmates. in 9th grade, I had the choice to continue studying Spanish or begin studying another language. At that moment, I decided that I would continue studying Spanish, but this time I would make sure that I was always ahead of the curve. I studied every day by working through exercises on the website Conjuguemos and making countless flashcards on Quizlet, and the results that I wanted soon followed. Over the four years that I took Spanish in high school, I skipped two years of Spanish due to work I did independently over the summer, maintained a 4.0 GPA, received my school's departmental award for excellence in Spanish, and earned a 780 on the Spanish SAT II. In college, I have been able to start taking Spanish classes at the highest level that my school offers. Consequently, I will have earned all the credits I need for a major in Spanish by the end of my sophomore year.

Although this tutoring position is paid, I would just as readily offer my services for free. As a result, I will always be willing to negotiate rates with the students that tutor. I absolutely love helping other students gain confidence in their ability to understand Spanish, and I will always put all of my effort into making this a reality. I always respond to messages quickly, so feel free to contact me with any further questions or to schedule a lesson.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Always well-prepared

Joe always comes very prepared to our sessions. He diligently constructs vocabulary sets for practice and comes ready with new material on grammar every week. In addition, he also prepares worksheets every session to test the comprehension and understanding of the material. I really appreciate his style of covering all the basics and fundamentals of grammar first since it is also the same way I le
