About Brendan

I have always loved learning and imparting that to my students. Often students get discouraged not because they are not capable, but because they have been taught things only one way. I will work with you to adapt to your learning style and needs. I believe we are all able to better ourselves when we put our heart in it.

I received a Bachelors in Government and Politics (basically Political Science) from St. Johns University and a Masters in History from Queens College, during which time I also became certified in secondary education Social Studies.

I have worked in Adult Education with people learning English from many different countries, at different stages of the learning process. I am patient with new learners of English and enjoy challenging my more advanced students to continue to improve upon their fluency. I have also taught GED and Citizenship classes all through the Freeport Adult Education program.

As I mentioned earlier, I have a certification in secondary education Social Studies and spent several years teaching 7th, 11th and 12th grade history, economics, and civics in Malverne School district. The 11th grade classes I taught were US History Regents classes, but I also worked with both an inclusion 7th grade class with special education students and the 7th grade honors class so I have grown to appreciate and adapt my teaching style to the particular needs of the student.

Writing is something I also love to work with students on. If you are a native speaker or not, English can be a difficult language to navigate grammatically and I welcome the opportunity to edit and improve upon your writing skills. I have taught students in high school to write Document Based essays for Regents, but also helped ESL students develop their writing skills in a new language.

If you need help in any areas I have mentioned above, I would be very eager to work with you and help you develop as well as quickly as you are able to further succeed. Thank you for taking the time to read.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I was a New York State finalist in Speech as a senior in high school. I was Vice president of the Johns Hopkins Debate Team, running both its annual tournament in 1996 and serving as tournament director of the North American Championships in 1997. I also won the Princeton Tournament in 1997 and Franklin and Marshall Tournament in 1998 as well as as being ranked in the top teams and speakers of the year nationally both in 1996-1997 and again 1997-1998. As a high school teacher from 2005-2006 I coached the Malverne High School Debate Team. Throughout my time in debate I have used my experience and abilities to impart to peers and students alike strategies and ways of developing and improving Public Speaking skills. I like to make Public Speaking a fun challenge for the students i work with.
