In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked with desktop publishing for over 20 years, first with Quark and then InDesign. I have created numerous books, brochures, posters, magazines and templates. I studied at Cooper Union and have an MFA from Tyler School of Art. I've worked for many magazines (Artforum, Vanity Fair, Newsweek) and publishers (Penguin, Random House, Simon and Schuster). I expanded my knowledge of InDesign by working in an office with a team of other designers. My teaching method involves carefully evaluating student needs, and designing projects that they choose and feel motivated to complete.

I have used a Macintosh computer at home and on the job for over 20 years. I use it for graphic design projects, social networking and for creating and organizing my artworks.
I enjoy teaching others how to use the tools the Mac provides and get maximum enjoyment from it. I use the many of the programs that come with the Mac such as iPhoto or mac mail as well as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Indesign, Bridge).
I have used PCs (Windows) as well so I can help people who are making the transition.
I am an artist and graphic designer with a strong love for reading and poetry. Phonics was one of my favorite subjects in elementary school. I have a BFA from Cooper Union and MFA from Temple University. My teaching experience with children is through giving art workshops and studio visits on Governors Island. While not trained in teaching phonics, I bring creativity and patience and enthusiasm to my tutoring. I am able to engage young people with a variety of hands-on activities so learning is fun.
