About Chris

Hello! I'm a 4th year engineering student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, pursuing a dual degree in Electrical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering, with a minor in Psychology.

I've been a tutor for 7 years, and have assisted a wide range of students. Subjects in math that I've tutored in range from Prealgebra to advanced Calculus. Also, I have worked extensively in prep for math on many Standardized Tests (PSAT, SSAT, Regents, SAT, ASVAB, etc.). Whether a student is trying to get a top mark, or is just looking to pass the course, I have experience getting satisfying results. I'm enthusiastic about the subjects I teach and I have a flexible schedule.

My Teaching Style:

I've found that the best way to teach math efficiently is to step into my student's shoes and see the problem as they do. By asking the student to work me through the problem, I can see exactly where confusion arises, as well as how to improve the student's analysis of the problem. This allows me to know exactly how to teach my students how to solve effectively and with confidence.

For the topics that the student has not learned yet, I first walk through the steps needed to solve it, and make sure they understand the reasoning behind each step. Once the student has sufficiently grasped how to handle the problems they needed help with, I have practice problems that the student can do for the next session. Also, if there are a shortcuts to getting the solution, I will show it to the student so that they can quickly work through exams.

For students looking to prepare for the Standardized Tests, I have strategies and tricks that some companies charge a good deal to teach 1-on-1. Whether you're a slow writer, have difficulty with the reading comprehension portion, or don't know how to tackle the more difficult math problems, I'll help you learn and strategize according to your own style to optimize your score.

Outside of the Sessions:

I'm very accessible outside of tutoring sessions. My students should feel free to contact me anytime by email as well as phone and text message regarding any questions or concerns. I believe a friendly relationship between student and teacher is the healthiest for a learning environment, as I've found it helps them grasp the subject quickly and with more enjoyment than when in the classroom.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I began tutoring this subject while in high school, to my peers. As an engineering student I have a deep understanding of the topic, and I'm a general math enthusiast!

Algebra 2

I began tutoring this subject while in high school, helping both my peers and younger students understand the topic. As an engineering student I have a deep understanding of the topic, and make use of it as a technology professional. I could not do my job without an understanding of this subject.

Calculus

I was an A student at Calculus in both high school and college, and have tutored my peers throughout my own education.

SAT Math

Having tried SAT prep classes while preparing for the exam, I'm very familiar with what is taught during those advertised sessions. I'm familiar with the tips and tricks companies charge a good deal to teach, which are the test taking strategies I developed myself as a student. I know how to help my students tailor their skills to the strategy best for them, and become most effective come test day. As an engineering student I have a deep understanding of the topic, and I'm a general math enthusiast!

SAT Reading

My students feel prepared and practiced when they enter the room.

SAT Writing

While this section doesn't have a rubric as clear-cut as the others, my students know what it takes to get a good mark.
