Having had teachers for both parents (dad was an English professor and mom was an elementary school teacher) I early on gained a proficiency in English grammar and creative writing skills. I thoroughly applied those skills in creative writing and history classes in High School and then went on to study languages and creative writing at Cornell University. Throughout my career I have worked as a reporter on numerous newspapers which obviously entailed being a stickler for proper grammar and word proficiency. Like my professor dad, I believe learning writing skills should be something that is not only challenging but fun, and along with this enthusiasm the student should be impressed with the great importance reading and writing skills have in advancing the individual in our society. Once reading and writing kills are properly and thoroughly learned they are something that will stay with the individual throughout his or her lifetime and will open up not only opportunities in higher education but future employment as well. Added to all this is the wonderful world of reading books that learning these skills can open up to any individual who is willing to apply themselves. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
