About Katie

Hi! I've been teaching elementary special education for the past 7 years. This year is my 8th, and I still love what I do. Currently, I'm teaching 5th grade and have worked in kindergarten, second and sixth grade as well. My experiences tutoring have been both successful and rewarding. Past clients have presented with reading challenges such as decoding and comprehension; weak organizational and study habits and difficulty with Common Core Curriculum. Since I've been working with the Common Core Standards for so long, I am more than confident in my ability to teach it as well as differentiate my instruction in order to make it accessible to all learners.
Through volunteering with a therapeutic horseback riding program, I've met and taught students of all ages and abilities; we practice horse care, grooming, and of course, horseback riding! The elementary school age is my favorite group of students, because of the critical role a teacher plays at this young age. However, I have worked with cognitively, emotionally and physically challenged adults in residences. Teaching in all settings is quite meaningful work and I truly enjoy getting creative, celebrating little victories and seeing my students carry themselves with pride.
Private tutoring is my preferred method of teaching. The one-to-one setting affords me the opportunity to understand how the individual student learns; therefore, I can teach to his or her personal learning style. I look forward to positively affecting new students and at the same time, adding to my repertoire as I learn what works best for each individual. I am currently tutoring and offer excellent references upon request. Please note, my rate is negotiable depending upon frequency, duration and location of lessons. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

My Masters in Special Education has prepared me well for working with students with ADD/ADHD. With a focus in Behavior Disorders I've learned many strategies to accommodate students with a diagnosis of ADD/ADHD. In my Student Teaching experiences I have had the opportunity to apply strategies working with children who share the diagnosis; I have diversified instruction, modified lessons and followed IEP guidelines to support these students.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

My training in Behavior Disorders encompasses the history and manifestation of Autism spectrum disorders. Additionally, I have worked one on one with autistic children and adults in my volunteer work with a therapeutic horseback riding program. I have been trained in ABA and feel comfortable and confident working with the population.

Common Core

I am more than qualified to teach common core curriculum. I have been in classrooms daily for the past five months. I taught/reinforced common core math and ELA to 5th grade students in summer school. In September I student taught general education second graders and am currently student teaching 6th grade general/special education in an inclusion class. The commonality of all three experiences is the common core curriculum.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am qualified to tutor Elementary age children because my Master's degree in elementary general and special education has well prepared me to do just this. Additionally, my state certification will be complete in May, I have two exams left to finish. Currently I am wrapping up my third student teaching placement, a 6th grade inclusion class. Previously, I student taught a 5th grade self contained class and a general education 2nd grade class. I am comfortable with childhood understandings and development; I am well versed in differentiating instruction.

Elementary Math

Certified in elementary general and special education. Currently teach 6th grade, taught 5th grade remedial math last summer. Familiar and experienced with common core.

Special Needs

I am qualified to tutor children with special needs because my Master's Degree, along with my experience and completion of the NYS special education content specialty test have prepared me well. I am currently student teaching under a special education teacher in an inclusion class. I work with our 8 students as a whole, in small groups and one-on-one on a daily basis. I am beginning the NYS EdTPA with one of these students. I also tutor a child with an IEP once a week; we work on homework and reading.
